In the spirit of Classicstyxfan's unifying topic on rain-themed songs, this was one that garnered some interesting responses on another board to which I belong. I don't think we have covered this here before.

What ACOUSTIC guitar performances on a recording are standouts for you.

Of course "Crystal Ball" and "Foolin' Yourself" were high on my list.

Also:

Zebra - "Who's Behind the Door" (one of my faves)
Triumph - "Hold On"
The Who (Pete Townshend) - On pretty much all of "Tommy"

YES, YES & YES to ALL of your choices!!! (and you could probably throw in some YES too....of course the obligatory ROUNDABOUT, but i absolutely LOVE the wurm (the end portion of starship trooper), which is just a repetitive acoustic/electric jam.

WISH YOU WERE HERE- Floyd a classic

BLACK MOUNTAIN SIDE/WHITE SUMMER- Led Zep underrated, under appreciated

Over the Hills- LED Zep (Just love when the 12 string kicks in)

Ramble On- Yep, Zep (the bass drives the song, but i still love the acoustic guitar)

BLACKBIRD- Beatles -doesn't get much better than this

since i'm still finishing up Slash's book, i have to mention PATIENCE (love the slithery guitar solo in that one)

I AM ONE- The WHO (i can't remember if its acoustic or electric, but it's gorgeous)

Anything Rik Emmett does- the man is a genius on guitar

Time of Your Life- Green Day- simple, but stunning

Tears In Heaven- Clapton yeah, not his best song, but the meaning and emotion behind it just makes me tear up every time

Can't Find My Way Home- Blind Faith (LOVE the guitar work, not crazy about steve winwood's vocals)

Me & Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin raw emotion

Space Oddity- Bowie totally unlike his later stuff

Anything & everything by Simon & Garfunkle

Uncle John's Band- Grateful Dead (plenty of other great dead tunes, but i always loved this one)

Fire & Rain James Taylor

Celluloid Heroes - The Kinks

Any Neil Young (needle & damage done, old man, sugar mountain, hey hey my my), as well as CSN&Y

Wild Horses, Memory Motel- Stones

Landslide - Fleetwood Mac

Everlong (acoustic version) Foo Fighters

John Barleycorn - Traffic

I would add "Lights" too

"Innuendo" by Queen...ya gotta check out the middle section on acoustic guitar. Brian May wrote it but realized he couldn't play it, so he got Steve Howe from Yes to take care of business.

John Barleycorn - Traffic

You HAVE to love the intro on Fooling Yourself, a favorite of mine... I could listen to Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die, the whole album, over and over forever, it's just fabulous...

Question- The Moody Blues. It also has one the most awesome bass groves of any song I know.

I'm a guitarist so this thread is a bit near and dear to my heart! Lots of great songs on acoustic guitar, of course--so WAY too many in this regard to actually single out. In order to keep it down to a manageable few and to stay true to what I believe was the intent of the original poster, I am going to limit myself to songs that ONLY begin with a distinct & SEPARATE acoustic instrumental INTRO. These are a few off the top of my head that are special to me, (some of which I can play either parts or most of on guitar myself), in NO particular order:

What I SO liked about this thread, elsewhere, and here, are the great songs I don't really know much about. I have actually gone an purchased some from iTunes. Did so with Tesla's "Love Song." Gonna go listen to "Lay Me Down", too.
