Why do they tour almost everyday? Do they really need the money that bad? I'm still kinda new about them and really don't know.

They love what they do - perform. and they no longer receive revenue from their albums the way they use to. Seeing there are few groups of their era that sell any real number of albums the way they did in their hey day, this is the way they get their paycheck.

He's the groups elder statesman. Just a nickname.

Tommy is building a new house and studio, he needs to tour to pay the bills, heck they all have bills to pay this is how they make their living.

If you make music for a living, and someone is willing to pay you to make that music, I do believe that is why they tour a lot. When the money no longer rolls in then they will have no choice but to stop.

Right now, for them, the living is good.

Let's ask Higgy what he thinks. Then we'll know for sure. ;-)

I was listening to Gordon Lightfoot being interviewed on the radio last week. He was asked about why he continues to tour. While he loves the music of course, its a living. He said (1) he enjoys playing and (2) it pays the bills and allows his family to live a lifestyle they have become used to. He implied that he has enough money to not play but this would obviously impact on the lifestyle of his family. I presume this is the same thing for Styx and any other classic musician that continues to play a lot of dates where the back catalog does not generate millions per member.

I guess you need to weigh overexposure (and thus less fans showing up per venue) with playing less dates (and possibly more fans showing up per venue). I am sure they have done this cost benefit analysis.

We sometimes forget that its a job. Many people who make over $1Million a year continue to work well into their 60s because they can enjoy it, engage in estate planning, provide for their family, etc... These guys are no different.

Speaking from experience, banning him doesn't guarantee anything.

ditto
Anyone who has ever performed and likes to perform, would do so as often as possible, it's a great rush.
