Saw "Styx" in Raleigh, NC

Saw a group that was billed as "Styx" a few months ago. Tommy, JY, Todd & the new bassist did great, but Lawrence Gowan WAS THE WORST!!!! He spent most of the time leaned over the keyboard with his butt facing the audience!. Also, when he tried doing any of the classic stuff, his voice was so nasal & thin sounding that he completely ruined the songs!. Do us a favor, "Larry" - STICK WITH YOUR STUFF, DON'T TRY TO DO ANY OF DENNIS SONGS BECAUSE YOU SIMPLY CANNOT DO ANY OF THE OLD SONGS ANY FORM OF JUSTICE!!! Also, interact with the audience & quit spinning that damn keyboard around every second of the show!

Tommy & JY know that Dennis' sound is VITAL to Styx - that's why they got someone who is trying to sound like Dennis. Journey had to do the same thing with Steve Augeri replacing Steve Perry because they knew that sound HAD to be there.

This band cannot call themselves STYX if Dennis is not there. G-n-R can't do it without Slash/Axel, Van Halen can't do it without DLR & Eddie, & STYX cannot do it without the combo of J.Y., Tommy & Dennis. Please, Dennis Tommy & JY, get over your differences & give us the show we deserve!!!![/u]

Wow, if all you said is true, one would have to wonder why this is the one performance where Larry isn't acting like Larry.

JY and Tommy didn't replace Dennis with a Dennis clone. If they had, there probably would be less issues in the overall arguement. In my opinion, one of the problems that many of Dennis' proponents have is that they didn't hire someone more like Dennis.

Journey is clearly obsessed with sounding like Steve Perry, see the JSS debacle.

And legally they can call themselves Styx. As can Guns N Roses led by Axl rose & Van Halen without David Lee, Sammy or Michael.

Larry has his on stage personna and spends tons of time interacting with the fans throughout the show. The spinning keyboard is overblown by peeps on this board. It allows him to interact better withthe others on stage and the audience.

But you didn't go there to cheer on Styx and appreciate what they do. That is apparent. Hard to believe that those that follow the band still don't know Dennis isn't there after almost 10 years.

Constant theme I see at every show since the split up to the show I saw this past October in CA. One of the reasons I stay incognito as it tends to draw me into conversations I don't feel like having lol

I cannot say I am surprised that there are still people out there who don't know who is and isn't in the band anymore. If you think about it, the bulk of people going to the shows are not necessarily following the band. The band is long past its heyday and flies well below the radar these days...so why would the casual fan know?

I don't think the revolving keyboard is overdone by just this board. I've heard about it from casual fans. You either like it, or you don't.

And again, isn't all about what you want to get out of a show? To each his/her own.

Peace

Actually I DID go there to cheer them on - it's just that in my opinion, Larry's performance ruined the show, that's all. Had he not tried to do any of the songs Dennis did, it may not have been so bad. He simply cannot bring the same feeling with those songs that Dennis did because of the voice difference. And I do realize that they can LEGALLY call themselves Styx (just like the other bands you mentioned) but just like I said, it was only "Styx" in name, not in spirit. Many of the people in the audience felt the same way - maybe it was an off night for him, but when you don't see his face for the majority of the show, it does not give a good impression.

I've known that Dennis was not with the band since Larry came into the fold.

The other Bands were Def Leppard & Foreigner. Foreigner had a different singer (I don't even know what his name was) instead of Lou, but he did an awesome job! His audience interaction was great - he had us pumped up!. His voice was not as deep as Lou's, but comparably, he still did a better job for Foreigner than Larry did for Styx.

So did you try to find out any information about Gowan...what songs he might sing and how he performs before spending the dollars to go to this show?

Go see Dennis if you want to hear a Dennis type sing those songs. Just go to Youtube and check out some samples of his show before going. If you like a show with 2 women standing in the backgroud dancing/swaying (whatever the hell you want to call what they do) to songs like Grand Illusion you will probably enjoy it. Myself..nah, I'll pass.

Don't get me wrong, I would prefer Dennis in Styx doing his songs but Larry is fine with me. I thought he was fine as a replacement in '99 when I saw them. I figured at least now I can see them play more than once every 10 years, even if it isn't with Dennis.

Of course you can. Why heck, they'll play your neighborhood three times a week.

Exaggeration of a situation is highly underrated

Styx with Dennis, Styx with Larry

Styx was very special with all the "hey dey" members: Dennis, Tommy, JY, Chuck and John. Styx with Larry, Tommy, JY, Ricky and Todd is just another band. I miss the signature sound of Styx from 1976-1983. It is kind of like Walt Disney trying to replace Mickey Mouse, with Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks.

My point is that it is an exaggeration that were Dennis still in the band that you wouldn't see them for 10 years, just as it's exaggeration that the band plays the same places ad nauseum. Yes, it's well known Dennis doesn't enjoy touring as much as the others in the band, but he does tour. I just get tired of that argument. No offense meant.

Peace
