What was your first Styx song you heard & where were you

Postby Classicrockr » Mon Jan 28, 2008 12:49 pm

I think it was early '79. I was in the car, sleeping up against the window. My mom stopped next to a cornfield for some deer that were crossing the road. I was in that light phase of sleep (where you go in & out of consciousness) when "Renegade" started playing. I remember the "Hangman is comingdown" part. Then I was waking up - I looked out the window, & right as Tommy does the scream part, I saw this huge scarecrow - I jumped & yelled because my head was right by the speaker & I thought that scarecrow was coming through the car to tear me apart... after that I kept wanting to hear that song over & over again - it was kinda cool to be scared like that by a song.

Anyone else with anything interesting?

"Renegade" was my first Styx song that I can remember and it scared the hell out of me too.....around 1978 at the family trailer in Lake Eliza IN hearing it on the radio and the beginning was scary to a 4 or five year old girl who was supposed to be in bed sleeping

I was ten and listening to my little Snoopy transitor radio and I remember hearing Babe. Everytime I hear that song, I think of that little radio...it was my lifeline!!

Mine was Lady.........on my 40 year old Bendix tube radio with the small incandescent light bulb to light up the tuning knobs. I know it was at night, I often fell asleep with the radio on.

The 1st several times I heard it were in similar situations. I didnt really discover Styx other than that song until just after Crystal Ball came out.....the title track and one other song from the album were part of some multi media presentation thing in the auditorium at my High School. It was very high tech....2 or 3 slides at a time synchronized with the music, and occasionally 1 of the screens would have a filmed segment. I remember admiring the sound system.

after that I was hooked.

I know it was "Lady" and I am sure it was on my car radio, but am not completely positive about when or where. Likely around the time it was a radio hit which was, of course, long after it had originally been released on an album.

I remember vividly two things. The amazing voice of the lead singer. I had never heard anyone sing like that and it caught me then and there and has never let go. The other was I had never heard harmonies like those. Ever. I had always been a fan of close harmonies in singing, but Styx took it to a whole new level.

While I have vague memories of Lady in my memory banks, honestly the first Styx song I have a clear memory of was Lorelei. At a neighbor's bbq on the radio. That song stuck in my head.

It was Lorelei.

I was 19 and it was my first time away from home. I was attending a festival near Chickamauga Damn in TN. There were hot air balloons floating away and Loralei was blasting away from one of the local radio stations that was hosting the event on site.

The first one I really noticed or remember noticing was the Grand Illusion. I was a Junior in High School and somebody had brought that album to English Classs in one of those, let's take apart the lyrics things. The thing I could not get over was the opening riff, I had never really heard anything like it. It was very catchy.

Let's see,.. I lost my virginity back in....oops! wrong thread! :P

It was "LADY", when I was 10 or 11. Late at night. Couldn't sleep and was listening to the old radio.
After that, I stayed up. Every night, faithfully, usually until midnite, for WIFC to play the damn song. Couldn't sleep unless I heard it! :)

The first Styx song I heard had to be Lady but I don't remember it. It was on a compilation album with a bunch of other hit songs in the early 70's. The First song that I heard and was aware it was Styx was Come Sail Away. I was at a local park playing basketball. I fell in love with that song. It turned out one of my buddies older brother was working for A&M and for my birthday,he got us tickets and passes to see Styx at the Palladium. My first rock concert, I met the band, and it changed my life. I will always remember both experiences.....hearing CSA and seeing and meeting Styx. Life was good.

in early '83 my parents bought me three brand new cassettes for my 8th birthday.one was journey frontiers, def leppard pyromania was the next, the last one i opened was styx kilroy was here.early '83 saw a lot of good music being released i must say it was a good time for a youngster getting into music.my first song would be 'don't let it end' as a styx song.i'd go to bed and listen to it on my walkman.something about it was calming.

It was during the Christmas holidays in 1974. I started hearing Babe on the radio several times, mostly in the car. My sister and her friends Lisa & Karen bought the single. That was a cool looking label Wooden Nickle, I thought. On March 15th, 1975 I was at my friends St. Patrick's Day party. Lady was now in the top 10 and came on the radio. One of my friends, Beth, laughed and said this song was written about Lady here. She pointed to her dog Lady.

Actually, Jimmy, I just thought you had just lost your mind, like everyone else on this board. :D

I was puzzled too as Babe was on A & M not Wooden Nickel..
