Yeah..but at least Tom got someone who can f'n sing.. Unreal voice. This dude has a set of pipes. My favorite all time singer next to Dennis. One of my fav groups too.
Damn..Michael singing some of my fav all time songs. SWEET! No pun intended.
If you only know Michael from the old Stryper days then keep the remarks to what you know. The dude can sing/rock and the glam/bumble days are gone. Have been for years.

I agree with you Michael has an awesome voice, that is why I am so excited about this Boston tour. I wonder if they will work a couple of Stryper songs into the set.

At the tribute to Brad, Michael was awesome. A good choice for a replacement. He can never fill Brad's shoes, but he is a very capable and suitable replacement. It will be a good show.

This is kinda off-topic, but I think Queen made a mistake when they 'reformed' by using Paul Rodgers as the vocalist. He simply didn't have the range that ol' Freddie had. Queen should have tried to get that guy from The Darkness to sing in Freddie's place...if anyone has ever heard that band, you would agree!

I'll take rock legend Paul Rodgers over "that guy from The Darkness" any day. And I have both Darkness CDs.

I've made a lot of jokes about Lawrence because I really don't like him as a singer. I don't even like his solo stuff. I wuoldn't even like him if he never was a part of this whole bit we call Styx.

While to many it's a matter of opinion about why Dennis is not in Styx anymore..in all seriousness..I honestly just have never understood why it was Lawrence who was brought in. OK..fine..the guy can play keys, can twirl, jump and is a super nice guy. Fine..they for sure found someone who doesn't sound like Dennis..but with how great Dennis' voice is..I would think they would have at least found someone with a better singing voice.
For those who really support Lawrence..do you really, really think the dude can SING?

It never really hit me that the groups/artist that I continue to support are the one's who had people who could really sing. A lot of the one's I don't support anymore..have somewhat lost it.

My first time hearing Lawrence live was at the Rock To The Rescue show. Because I went there to support other artist..I told myself that even though I wasn't happy how the whole Dennis/Styx thing went down..I would be open minded.

Certain parts of the show..Tommy would come out with his guitar and do certain songs. Some people would come and join him. Jack came out to do High Enough. At one point Lawrence came out and joined. All I could do was cringe.. :x it really was bad.

The person who came with me hadn't heard Lawrence before..but had heard Dennis' Styx songs. When Styx came out and Lawrence did Dennis' Styx songs..the person who was with me looked like they were about to either laugh or vomit.

Putting all jokes aside and what REALLY happened that I will believe from the source.. Lawrence really cannot sing that well and just doesn't sing Dennis' songs well. I have heard regular joes SING Dennis' Styx songs better. Not saying they have to SOUND like Dennis..but at least carry a tune.

What to I judge being able to sing or still sing on? People like RIP-Brad Delp, DDY, Michael Sweet, Ann Wilson, Tommy Shaw-best sitting on a stool with a accoustic guitar when feeling well, Steve Perry and Jimi Jamison-of yesteryears. Those are just some. So..as I mention some in their prime..let me ask this so to prove I can cut him a break.
Has Lawrence always sounded like this? What gets me is some are saying he sounds better than ever.

Sometimes when we have someone taking the place of a lead singer who really had it..we cut them a break because we wonder how would the original person sound if they came back. Well in the Dennis/Lawrence case..we know because we hear Dennis singing the classic Styx tunes all the time. With Steve Perry..we just don't know. Brad Delp still sounded fantastic..as does Michael Sweet and Ann Wilson.

With all these groups getting back together..practically everybody..lol..we are getting a true taste of who still has it and who lost it..and reminded who never really had it..damn..there are so many who have been the lead singer who just cannot sing. I mean really SING. Carry a tune.

Not just because I am a huge fan of Boston and Stryper..but this whole thing is really just brilliant and I am completely geeked over it. If there was ever a time to use the word UNREAL..now is the time. Still pinching myself.

Again I ask..for those who support Lawrence..do you really, really think the guy can really sing? Can he really carry a tune?

I hold my own opinion on what happened with Styx/Dennis so keep that in mind as I say this so this doesn't turn into another who did what to who..even if Dennis had been out on his own terms and he was ok with everything..I still wouldn't like Lawrence singing and think he was a good choice as far as the singing of Dennis' songs. Fine..he's a great guy and can play the keys..but that's not enough when we are talking about needed someone to cover the Dennis' classic Styx songs.

Never- None
And proud of it
The You Tube Clips make me sick
The guy sings like a dying dog
Styx played 15 thousand seat venues with Dennis
Now they play to 500 followers
The numbers go down year after year
Soon they will be in front of 50 people
Then what?

Not going to go too far here, since we have been there and done this so many times. I will say that the first order of business for Styx post-DDY was go get a great keyboard player AND, hopefully, a singer. The got about 1 1/2 of what they wanted.

He can play the keys. He can do the DDY keyboard parts and he has a presence on stage. (Again, not to everyone's liking, but certainly many fans find him appealing ... for some str.....uh, never mind! ;) )

His voice is most certainly not for everyone, but he fills in, to what the touring and sometimes recording, Current Styx feel is more than adequate for their needs, live and in the studio.

In my view, the main attraction in the current touring ensemble of Styx is Tommy Shaw. He still has a really good voice and, apparently, charisma on stage.

I have not seen the current incarnation live. Only on TV. And heard two of the post-DDY CD's they recorded. That was more than enough for me.

My way of looking at it is this: there's a good reason why Larry Gowan never had a successful solo career in the US. His voice is average at best.

And for God's sake, Larry, will you PLEASE stop with the spinning keyboards??? That stupid stunt was played out by 2001.

Larry isn't bad on his own songs; actually most of them I really like and are some of the stronger ones Styx has done post-1999. My "issue" (and I use it loosely) is that I don't love his voice on DDY's songs, but since there are so few in the set, in all honesty, it's not a big deal. He's just fine on the keys.

I said it at the time and I'll say it now: I think getting Larry was a pretty smart idea. They consciously didn't get a DDY sound-a-like (see: Steve A. or Arnel P. for Journey). Bands who make a singer choice have two roads: get a soundalike and be stuck, or get someone who can interpret the songs in his own way and while not "the voice", will do them good enough for the casual fan. Styx chose B, and I do not fault them for it.

Larry by all accounts is also a nice guy and a good bandmate. So I'm not sure why there's the constant bitching and moaning other than a blind hatred for all things Styx without DDY, but we're 10 years in. Get over it.

Well good Lord..so much for what I thought was one of the nicest attempts to sincerely and seriously ask about Larry without bashing him as a human being.

If you reread my post..I was not trying to be a jack ass. Whenever new singers are brought into any group..I believe this duscussion will continue to come up. If you also reread my post..I stated that it had nothing to do with him being a nice guy or not and I DID NOT want it turned into a bitch fest. You're the one who chose to bring that up again. All I wanted was for people to answer seriously about Larry's singing. That was it.

Good thing I don't tell people what Deano does..and that's all I am going to say because telling me to GET OVER IT is one of the things I really hate being told.

Ummmm, I don't think you understand what "blind hatred" means.

If I like the DDY aspect of classic Styx and have always felt JY's presence was obnoxious and grating - when DDY is fired and JY takes over the band, I am likely going to hate it. This is not blind hatred, I have a reason.

You know, people have opinions. They can state them without being accused of "bitching".

Ayup. And the same thing with Van Halen & Hagar back in the 80s. I don't really like the Rodgers+Queen combo
particularly, but I'm glad that they at least went with a someone who has a different style and presence rather than someone just doing a Freddie impression.

I wasn't bashing Larry at all. In fact, I said I liked his stuff. I just think there's enough opinions - on both sides of the fence and for those of us who are inbetween - that at this point, it's really something you're just going to have to make up your own mind. Buy a ticket. Go and see Styx. You may love it. You may hate it. He only does a handful of songs, so even if you hate it, you still get JY and Tommy doing the rest - which isn't a bad thing.

Sorry if it came across as directed at you I'm just sick of people bashing the lineup and Larry for no good reason. Some have listened and formed an opinion. Others haven't. I've seen Styx numerous times since 1999 - same with DDY. Both have had good nights and not as good nights.

I mean, is he DDY? For heaven's sake no. Not by a long shot. But is he as bad as some would believe him to be? Not even close.

Just my $.02.

Indeed,YOU did it well.
Larry is not in there to take over from Dennis.
James and Tommy took over.
Larry is just filling out the gaps.
