you can make more money doing rib fests and local city fests, playing to 7/10000 than being 3rd on the bill to def leppard.
most of these places pay 30/50,000 for a show.

Methinks you might be surprised at how much a Def Leppard tour pays its "3rd bill."

I still think it's insane that Styx isn't headlining more. How are they opening for Boston? Why are they the third bill on the Def Leppard bill?

They need to stand up and not take this "opening act" crap anymore!! Just market yourselves - they can still headline!!

They are opening for Boston because it's Boston's tour and at this point in time..Boston is better than Styx.

I'd tend to think that Styx is content to play 2nd and 3rd Bill to other bands to generate more fans. Getting back to basics and/or just slowing things down a bit. They've been touring what seems like non-stop through Brave New World, Cyclorama, and Big Bang Theory, (and Influence).

Maybe a slower schedule is needed. People get burned out, not just musicians, but the fans as well.

OK, off to contemplate my life. Hope this post made sense, if not, just skip it.

what statement is dead wrong.
i thought the original tour with journey styx and reo was good for the bands to reestablish, but i dont think being 3rd on the bill and playing 45min sets is good at all, these bands are still big enought to only have 2 bands on the bill.
its going to suck seeing cheap trick only play 45 with journey.

Oh...so, what you meant to say was that in your opinion, you don't think it's a good idea - but *instead* you mistakenly typed that it makes less money than playing a rib fest.

I can see where we all misread that.

i seriously doubt that styx was getting 40,000 a night for being 3rd on the bill to def leppard. closer to 20,000

So lets do some math.

Average ticket price =$60
Average Venue = 12,000
Total = $720,000

I'll give you that's gross, but regardless how you do the math, I'd bet that Styx' portion is more than $20,000.

Oh, and I forgot the tshirt sales.

Last night shirts from all 3 acts were being sold in drones.

But I forget, you are their accountant and know better than us.

Not to mention that Styx and REO alternate first and second positions.

While I agree that Styx earns more than the 20k mentioned, there are some variables your math isn't adding in.

Of the $720K...it assumes an average of 12k in attendance. That might be a stretch...even for a triple bill.

What's the breakdown of how much each act gets? Let's say 40/30/30 (40% for Leppard since they are the headliner). That makes $216K.

I'd guess an average night, less t-shirt sales and expenses about $100K over an aggregate. Some nights more, some less...hence average. How that is split and who covers what expenses they have is another matter.

Last night there were easily 12,000 there from beginning to end. I know that there a bunch of cuts into the gross, but if you say the bands get $200,000 to split, even 25% is $50,000 and that is probably closer to what Styx would get. (I'm thinking 50/25/25 split because Def Leppard's production costs are huge compared to the others). Just on the flat rate of the show plus percentage of sales.

Fair enough...but let's remember that they won't always have that size audience either. Either way, I think they make more than the 20K mentioned before.
