My personal collcetion of music is heavily populated with music that was released prior to 1990.........and I'm curious as to what more recent music people here think is an absolute "must have" in their personal collection ?

Just looking for some ideas in case I cant figure out how to spend the tax refund......

Green Day - American Idiot
Mute Math - Mute Math (a personal favorite - nice mix of the modern and progressive)
Dennis DeYoung - 100 Years from Now

(Off the top of my head.)

Oh yeah, and I think Dennis DeYoung - "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is post 1990 :P

Agreed. I think In Absentia is probably still their definitive work, but everything they've done in the last 10 years or so has been fantastic.

MUSE's Black Holes & Revelations would be another solid choice, IMO.

I'm assuming you don't mean any Styx-related albums here, so I'll skip ones like "Damn Yankees," "Don't Tread," "Raised by Wolves," "7 Deadly Zens," "Welcome to Hollywood," Palookaville," "Cyclorama," "Retrospectacle," "100 Years From Now," and all those types... ;-)

Anything by LIVE, especially Mental Jewelry, Throwing Copper, and The Distance to Here.
Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming
Brian Setzer Orchestra - Guitar Slinger & Dirty Boogie
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
EMF - Shubert Dip
Marcy Playground - Marcy Playground
Depeche Mode - Violator
Matchbox 20 - Yourself or Someone Like You
Anything Eva Cassidy
Soundtrack for the X-Files movie was pretty good, as was the ST for City of Angels
Taylor Mills - Lullagoodbye

Thanks to all, now I need to ask my nephew if he has any of the music ( without links provided ) so I can sample.

I did buy Nora Jones 1st CD a few years back, and occasionally listen when in the right mood.

On the recommendations above, I bought Fear of a Black Planet and Deadwing from Porcupine Tree. Stabbim, you recommended In Absentia. Should I get that one as well? (All are available on iTunes). I really like Deadwing and the tracks I have listened to from Black Planet.

AMAZING album. Muse is a sick band man. Absolutely sick.

Also try out Absolution.

I'm SO glad to see more and more people listening to Porcupine Tree.

When it's all said and done I think those guys will end up being seen as one of the better bands of this day and age..

Can't speak for the second one, but I am assuming that Classicstyxfan as asking about NON-STYXlike albums when he asks the question about good music post 1990. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure he's aware of all of the Styx-related releases already.

I love WTH. Still, Palookaville is standing the test of time for me as the best of his CDs.

Frederikson/Denander - Baptism by Fire - actually has regular rotation in the car by me and my son. Not a bad song on it and some really well crafted lyrics.

Sticking to non-Styx releases (and there are more than 10, but listing some of the favorites off the top of my head)

Rush - Counterparts
Joe Jackson - Volume 4 (the new one Rain is good as well as is most of his output from 1991 - present; the only one I don't really like too much is NIght Music)
Green Day - American Idiot
Anything by the Yellowjackets (and no, they are not jazz light at all ... these cats can swing esp. live), but if I had to pick one, Mint Jam
Howard Jones - a lot of it. He's done some good work post-major label (esp. Live Acoustic America, Working in the Backroom, and People, Revolution of the Heart)
Bryan Adams - Unplugged (after Into the Fire, my fav of his; although some of his studio albums like On A Day Like Today are pretty good)
Mike & The Mechanics - M6
Squeeze - Some Fantastic Place
Bill Holman Band - Brilliant Corners: The Music of Thelonious Monk
Go-Go's - G-d Bless the Go-Go's
Donald Fagen - Morph The Cat

EDIT:
Adding -
the early Oasis albums; they're classics
Nina Gordon - Tonight and the Rest of My Life
John Wesley Harding - Name ABove the Title

Classic, looks like "American Idiot" made several Best Of lists here. :D You won't be disappointed if you buy it, and they are sort of the progenitors of that sound. Modern punk? Alt punk? Not sure of the designation but copycats include Blink 182 and Sum 41 (although I like Sum 41).

It really is a great album front to back.

I'm not much on 90's era and beyond music and I won't name specific albums because I could listen to just about anything these bands/singers put out.

Collective Soul
Gin Blossoms
Alannis Morrissette
Gravity Kills
Matchbox 20
Shakira
Evanescence
Tori Amos

That's prolly the extent of what I like. lol sad, eh?

While I thought Shania Twains "Up" sucked ass, I have to admit that "Come on Over" was a serious guilty pleasure. She was my 1990's "Wham!" :D
