Head to Head

Postby Toph » Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:25 am

I saw this before on a Journey list and I thought it might be fun to do on the Styx list. It's called "Head to Head" and it's very simple. I throw out 2 Styx songs, you give me your preference. We see which songs are especially near and dear to Styx fans hearts.

To eliminate Tommy vs. Dennis bias, at least in the beginning, we will keep the songwriter/singer of the two songs the same...if we find we can handle it..we'll start intermixing singer/songwriters....

To kick us off...let's compare opening anthems to Styx's two signature albums....

Grand Illusion vs. Rockin The Paradise..

My choice: Rock Me Baby! - Rockin The Paradise.

Both speak to certain issues...and it's actually a hard choice for me...but I lean towards GI here.

One more vote for G.I. Im guessing theres a demographic split on this one, with the break being age over/under 42 years old.

Now here's another match up for consideration........

First Time vs Plexiglass Toilet

my vote is for the latter, it's just more fun of a song !!!!!

I'll second that. I much prefer PT to FT. FT...simply has to be flushed down PT.

Tough decision on GI vs Rockin' the P. I will go with GI for its progressive sound, one of the reasons I always loved Classic Styx.

LOL @ Sadie!!

Send First Time off to live with A Love Foretold in a galaxy far far away, thankyouverymuch. I will take Plexiglas Toilet ANY day! :P

Tough call. I think Rockin the Paradise is probably the best song on Paradise Theater. But The Grand Illusion is a classic album and song. I will have to go with GI

Plexiglass toilet definately gets my nod. I dig novelty songs.

Alright at the ripe old age of 46 I take First Time. PT is no fun to make out too :)

Very tough choice on the first one, love them both. I enjoyed the whole Paradise concept and that tour (original) was the first time seeing Styx live. By a very close margin, I vote for Rocking the Paradise. Go sparky go.

OK, I have a hypothetical question, and for once I am being serious.

Do you think First Time would have been a #1 hit if it was released by Barry Manilow in 1980 ?

It is syruppy schlock, but that is his specialty........the song is well written all things considered.

whadya think ????

I'll go one better - I think it would have been maybe not a #1, but certainly a top 10 had Styx released it on the coats of Babe in 1980. Of course that would have justifiably killed the group's credibility. I do think Why Me was a poor second choice as a single. If they really wanted to take a gamble, they should have released Boat On The River as a single in the States..

I'm thinking perhaps Air Supply over Manilow. That song was more up their alley in all honesty.
