Dennis part of benefit for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Postby Angiekay » Thu Jul 31, 2008 12:37 am

Cream's Jack Bruce, Traffic co-founder Dave Mason, Jefferson Starship members and Styx's Dennis DeYoung are among the artists lined up to play a benefit to raise money for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and the John Entwistle Foundation. The two-day festival is slated to take place September 19th and 20th at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary, North Carolina.

According to LiveDaily.com, the first night will be headlined by Mason, and the second night will feature Jefferson Starship with original Jefferson Airplane founders Marty Balin and Paul Kantner, along with Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten. Also set to perform are members of the former John Entwistle Band, ex-Deep Purple and Rainbow lead vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, Blue Oyster Cult lead singer Buck Dharma, and former Grand Funk Railroad frontman Mark Farner. Bruce is expected to close his set with some Cream hits. Then the headlining artists will do an encore tribute to the late Who bassist John Entwistle.

Proceeds will go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum's educational outreach program , as well as the John Entwistle Foundation, which provides musical instruments and music lessons to disadvantaged kids.

I like the idea of supporting John Entwistle's cause, however it seems ironic that Dennis and other's on this list would play for a sponsor (Rock and roll hall of fame) that would surpass thier entry into said "Hall" in lieu of such scary talent as what they put in each year. That being said, nice of them to support disadvantaged kids.

Maybe between this and Styx's recent support of the HOF they will finally wise up and induct the boys. They are certainly justifiable. Compare it to the baseball hall of fame - in baseball hall of fame - numbers matter (3,000 hits, 300 wins for pitchers, 500 HRS, etc.) - results matter. And Styx can certainly claim that they have the results.

- First band to have four consecutive triple platinum albums
- 6 platinum plus albums
- 11 gold albums
- Longetivty - one of very few acts to have top 10 singles in three different decades
- 8 top 10 singles
- 16 top 40 singles
- 5 top 5 albums
- 2 gold singles
- A #1 single
- A #1 album
- #1 Band of 1980
- People's Choice Award
- Huge concert draws
- Arguably, the most dominant band in the late 70s/early 80s.
- Leader in AOR/"Pomp" rock genre
- Mixing of theatrics and rock
- Strong musicianship

What else do these people need?

Besides, for anyone wishing for a reunion - this will be the only way to get it - if only for one night - but for many that would be enough.

Journey should also go in too.

I'm not sure if this is widely understood, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum are two different things. The former gives out awards and such and is dictated largely by the private tastes of Jann Wener and his circle of cronies, while the latter is much more inclusive of mainstream acts and more supportive, and has only a surface relationship with Wenner, who does not control it.

Hmmm I was not aware. But if there is any affiliation with Wener and his dillusional idea of "Rock" music......

Which effort did Styx support not to long ago? I seem to remember the current line up doing some sort of benifit for either ther Hall of Fame or the Museum piece.
