Kansas fugitive nabbed in Cape Coral accused of entertainment scam

A fugitive caught Thursday in Cape Coral was wanted in Kansas for allegedly using his entertainment business in Chanute, Kan., to bilk investors.

Neosho County Sheriff Jim Keath said David Fryd, 49, convinced investors to pay for big name bands like Kansas, STYX and .38 Special to perform in the area. The investors expected a return on their investment from the concert revenue including ticket sales.

Fryd is accused of paying those investors with fraudulent checks.

He owed a group of four investors about $91,000, according to the felony charges against him. Another group of investors is seeking $1 million in restitution through civil court.

Fryd left town in 2007 when all his checks bounced and was caught in Washington State. After posting bail, Fryd fled to Cape Coral.

Neosho County Sheriff's deputies, Keath said, worked closely with Cape Coral Police to locate Fryd.

“They (Cape Coral police) were great to work with,” Keath said. “We really appreciated all their help.”

After more than two weeks of surveillance, Cape Police Officers Brian Kearney and Keith Pankey captured Fryd. He was carrying a Washington state identification card and was in route to cash another worthless check.

Fryd is now in Lee County Jail. He decided not to fight extradition. Keath said his department is now making plans to bring Fryd back to Kansas to face the felony charges for passing worthless checks.

“A lot of people will be happy to have him caught,” Keath said.
