I think the problem comes with the resentment of some Styx fans that DeYoung's voice was replaced with such a bad singer. By most accounts, Gowan is considered talented and certainly he is/was a star in Canada in his own right. I don't agree with his fans, but I won't argue with them either. To each his own.

I think on some of the songs Gowan does good, but there are some DDY songs that he slaughters. Last time I saw them was last summer and he sounded like a chipmunk when he sang LAdy. In the earlier days he tried harder to pull a DDY off, but now adays he goes more in natural voice. His own songs that he sings in and solo stuff sound good. I like a lot of his stuff, but him covering DDY it is hiy and miss.
Now as a entertainer, he is great! I like the revoling keys. I like the part where he plays from the otherside of the board, or while it is spinning. JY plays the axe over is head and behind his back, so why can't Larry show off some. Let him jump off the keys, take pictures, whatever. He is over the top? Yea, but so is DDY. Larry is an over the top rocker, where DDY is an over the top ringleader, for lack of a better word. Both styles suit both men, and really both styles are good in Styx.
As a keyboardist, it is hard to say, what Larry had done with Styx has been great, his solo stuff, good, but nothing outstanding solo wise. But the same can be said for DDY solo, his keys have been good, but showy like his Styx stuff (not counting the new solo cd, that is Styx!!)
So I like both camps and like to watch them and by their music. Their are people out there like Bugsy says that either like or hate one of the camps. More power to them, it's their choice. What I don't like is when someone personally attacks another because, they do not agree with their opinon. Or puts one of the camps sown, becuase that group or member doesn't do things they way that person wanted.
Me I like both camps. Wish they would put out more music. I get more SRP this way. And if both sides are happy doing what they want, then more power to them.
