Hmmmm..... turnabout's fair play? :P It is a little jolting to hear Dennis singing Tommy's part. But, of course, he sounds great. :D

Very interesting. I don't know for sure, but I am willing to bet this was done at the promoter's insistence because BOTR was such a hit over there. Dennis has always tried to stay far away from any of the Styx songs he did not write (or co-write), and I doubt it was his idea to do this. Probably a promoter trying to get the best set list he could for this, kinda like when Gowan and Styx had to "Babe" in Japan. Doesn't sound bad, but I'd rather hear Tommy sing Tommy's songs and Dennis sing Dennis' songs.

As a side note, it looks and sounds like they are playing gigantic venues, so that's great exposure. I'm a bit surprised at Dennis' willingness to take part in an ensemble thing in which he's only one act, especially that far from home. The money must be great, either that or he's testing the waters for what response might be if he tried to tour there himself. You know, if one good thing came from his not being in Styx, it's that he is slowly being forced to get over certain things that might have been holding him back in the past.

I hope all is well.

This may be of interest, Sterling. From Hamburg publicity on the tour:

As in the years 1996 and 2000, the Proms this year will have to do without Mister Music, John Miles, as the musical director - he's on 'loan' to Tina Turner. Standing in for him is Dennis DeYoung, former singer, keyboarder and the mastermind behind Styx.
The Nokia Night of the Proms is unique in many ways.

Cool.. well I'm sure it will give him more experience when he does that 101 Dalmations thing mentioned on here early.

So other then doing part of Boat On The River with another person, what are the three songs Dennis is doing? Or is it just Boat on the River, Babe and Mr. Roboto?

Exactly right. BOTR is huge there - I'm sure it was a special request and a smart move in some ways. I agree I'd rather have Tommy singing it, but it is interesting nonetheless.

I talked to DDY and Suzanne about it a little bit when we chatted before the Hunchback show. Suzanne was definitely all for it, and the kids were going to go over and join them. They both seemed pretty up on it. I did not get the impression he was testing the waters for something much larger at all. I think it was just something presented to him and it was a good opportunity that probably paid very well. Yes, it gives him more exposure over there but I don't see him doing a full blown tour of Europe. I know they've kicked around the UK as an idea at one point.

Dennis still sounds fan-fucking-tastic. Styx would be best served to open up negotiations and get him back at all costs. He's the primary voice of Styx and a founding member. It remains a shame that he's not with them anymore. Anyne care to briefly explain what happened? I'm from Chicago...I should know this.

Sure

Dennis never wanted to do 300 shows a year and the 2 other goofs did.
BNW was done over the phone and it was a horrible effort all the way around.
Dennis made 100 grand off of the VW commercial and did not think it was fair to split the pay with Jim and Tom
SOOOOOOOOO they found a way to run away from him when Dennis said no to The BNW Tour because the cd sucked. He used a sick excuse but the bottom line was the cd was an embarrassment for everyone even him.
They found the worst replacement possible in Gowan and the band has died slowly for the last 9 years.

Dan, OMG and you're from Chicago???? Long story short, 1979 Cornerstone, 1983 Kilroy and last straw 1999. Actually who really knows what happened, there are so many sides of the downfall of Styx as a Band and Styx as a Business, very sad for kids like me that grew up with their great music that they put together as a band.

Hey, when are you coming up to Milwaukee for a concert???

I love Kim Wilde. She's probably twice as big physically as she was in 86 when I saw her, but I still love her voice.

Just take Perry and replace with DDY. Take Tommy and replace with Cain. Take JY and replace with Neal. Take JC and replace with Rolie. Take "Open Arms" and replace with "Babe". Take ROR and replace with Kilroy. Take Elmo and replace with Roboto. Take, "ow, my hip hurts" and replace with "Ow, stage lights burn my skin and make me sick." Take "I never felt like part of the band." and replace with "ice hockey on the river Styx." Take Augeri and replace with Gowan. Take Perryheads and replace with DeYoungians.

You will then pretty much have the story...or, you can go the other way around if you wanna know what happened to Journey.

Maybe cuz they hardly ever talk about Journey. 4000 msgs a day and maybe 4 about Journey. At least here the four msgs posted every month are about Styx.

You could also take Bad English and replace it with Damn Yankees. Take TBF and replace it with BNW. Take Escape and replace it with Paradise Theatre. Take Arrival and replace it with Cyclorama. Blah, blah, blah. Same situation.

An over bearing, controling, ego was trying to manipulate the other four egos in the band. The band got tired of it and kicked him out following a promising reunion. The fans took sides with their own egos and "my guy is better because..." agendas and started the verbal wars with each other...that sometimes continue to this day. That's what it really comes down to...

The big difference between the two stories is that one band's former singer can still hit the notes and wants to be back in the band he started, but the band doesn't want him despite the potential increase in ticket sales and interest. In the other case, the singer reportedly can't hit the notes anymore and has no desire to return to the band, despite the money they would make together.

Well said. Dennis needs to be more vocal about wanting back in. The fan pressure might take care of the rest. I'd throw a few rocks at the current band's tour bus for Dennis.

I assure you...the fan base is apparently evenly split. Each is doing what it wishes. Heading into 10 years apart. Let it be. Each is at fault. I mean no disrespect, but after all this time, I feel like I've typed these words more than any others on this forum.

Peace to all
