One Hundred From Now

I have been listening to this over the past week or so. I have to say it is an excellent album. I will even say it is his best solo album. I wish he would release more of this kind of music. It is too bad that his attention turned to Robotos and Hunchbacks because I think he could have had a much stronger impact on rock music then he ever will in theater. I think this is the Dennis people liked when he was in Styx and wished they could hear more of.

I really think any future albums with music like this will hinge a great deal on how "100 Years" fares in the US. If it does well, the label will want more, and, hopefully, he will deliver.

I don't. I think it depends on Dennis' desire to create such music. He doesn't need a label to put it out on I-Tunes, or a website somewhere. If he has the ambition, and his heart is into it, he can find a way. If not, he'll continue with whatever it is that does drive his creativity.

Also, I don't t think this is going to do well in the US...not because it is 'bad' but because very few care any longer. A new DDY album isn't going to generate a lot of attention. The music, even though it is good, isn't too radio friendly in today's world. It's more of a Styx/DDY fan friendly album...kinda like Tommy's 7DZ. It's something he should be proud of, no matter how commercialy successful it is.

I do agree here, but Dennis seems the sort to need a bit of impetus to get busy with his music. The push from DEP in Canada got the album out in the first place. I wonder if it simply would have languished otherwise.

It sure will depend very much on where his heart lies as to what music will come forth from him down the road.

Most certainly there will be no airplay of any tracks off of this album -- probably not in any market. You got that exactly right! (Unless, of course, the duet is with Britney or the Jonas Brothers. :P )

Right now I'd still prefer most of Tommy's 7DZ album to DDY's 100 Years.. There are only 4-5 "repeat" songs on 100 years for me right now, yet I can listen to 7DZ from beginning to end no problem.

Still its Dennis's best work in years.. as is Tommy's was an amazing CD 10 years ago too..

I know there's not a snowball's chance in hell of this happening, but it's fun to think about some of the possibilities.. If Dennis or Curb were willing to release the title track as the first single, and modern it up some, I actually think it could do something on the classic rock stations that actually play new music.

The catch would be that it would obviously have to feature a duet partner that is relatively hot right now(as many have suggested; beating a dead horse, I know), but more importantly than that, the key would be that it would have to be timed to also be featured on the other artist's newest album as well.. I know there's all kinds of copyright red tape, but this certainly wouldn't be the first time that both artists have released a duet on their own individual albums. Dennis' new album would not get anywhere near the exposure or promotion that say.. a new "Nickelback", "Evanescence", or "Blue October" release would get, would it?

This could really open doors for Dennis in the future, and cause more radio stations in the mainstream rock and adult top 40(hell, maybe even modern rock) format to be open to some future singles from the new Dennis DeYoung album. Curb would just have to find an artist or band who was infuenced enough by the music of Styx to want to feature Dennis on their new album and single; this couldn't be that difficult.. Okay, maybe not "Blue October", lol, but would "Nickelback" be that much of a stretch? I know Curb will never go this amount of trouble to get Dennis out there, but I really think if everything fell into place at just the right time, it really could work. I think this would be the best chance of Dennis getting any kind of radio attention, and having the potential for more in the future.

I am probably in the minority here. But I had a hard time getting through the album. It just didn't do anything for me.

7DZ on the other hand is a great album.

Ya know, I enjoy both...but I know I'm in the minority when I say 7DZ...not so much anymore. But I also don't think 100 Years is going to lite America on fire either.

GREAT GREAT CD. I still give the Zens a spin from time to time. Tommy's BEST bt FAAAARRRRRRR!

Glen's Welcome To Hollywood is even better.

Two MUST CD's

7DZ is meh at best ... I've never really liked it. A few tunes aren't bad ("Ocean" is arguably the best one there, "Stop Knockin'" is OK, "In This Night" is tolerable, "Straight Down the Line" is a good tune but pales in comparison to the Shaw/Blades version ...), but I found it meh when I first heard it, too. I also don't like the production, and TS' voice sounds kinda thin and shrill here. I don't see people's fascination and love for it. It's better than What If, but that's not saying much.

agreed. palookaville and WTH nudge out 7DZ, but i'd rank hallucination up there too. it's better than 7dz, prob tied with glen's for best solo non styx products.

Totally agree - like I said, 7 deadley zens sucks. Ambition is Shaw's best solo album and Shaw Blades is better than anything. Tommy tried to get too cute and too weird on it. The stuff between songs ("Need Water") is dated and detracts from the overall album. Some good songs, some clunkers, but not great IMO.

I wouldn't say it sucks, but I agree that 7DZ has its good and bad moments. There really are some great songs, and even the songs that aren't that great have some things to recommend them, like good performances or arrangements. But there are some weak tracks, and I certainly agree that the weird spoken-word electronica stuff serves no purpose. It's wholly self-indulgent, nothing I can imagine actually wanting to listen to for any sort of enjoyment. Overall I like 'Ambition' a whole lot more, and of course 'Hallucination' trumps everything else Tommy has ever done outside of Styx, in my opinion.

I hope all is well.

Because when the majority of it sucks, in my book, it sucks. Go get a hankie because I've said something bad about your idol's work...Wah wah wah..

...and the majority of the people in this thread say it doesn't suck. So, in my book, it doesn't suck. So, go listen to something that does suck, like any of DDY's studio albums prior to the one this thread was supposedly about.

I like both cd's. I prefer 100 Years over Zens, which certainly comes as no surprise.

But I gotta say, for me...it's not exactly as if any of the members of the band have set the world on fire with their solo material.

So...repeating my mantra...like what you like. Head bangs on keyboard one more time.

Toph, nice reply. I ask you a simple question and you respond in such way. I guess your Mommy and Daddy let you on the computer again today to check your email. They must be so proud!

Oh and for the record Tommy isn't my idol.. neither is DDY.. I respect both of their work and support both parties. If I didn't I would have seen each party live as many times as I have.

Ambition is his most conistent solo album, but GWG still remains my favorite and most listened to of the bunch. Both Shaw Blades projects are better than most of his solo output, as I would argue both Damn Yankees albums. Tommy just works better with collaboration.

I like 7DZ. Tommy did some experimentation with the production. I especially dig its organic guitar tones.
