Can't really say that I have a vote for the best movie of 2008, but it certainly wouldn't be for Dark Knight. This was a hugely disappointing (and disturbing) movie for me. I think that the whole darn thing has been blown out of proportion with talks of Oscars and such (largely in part to Ledger's death). I thought Burton's Batman film was much better with Nicholson as the Joker (not that I think he should have played the role this time, I'm just comparing the two). Ledger's portrayal just didn't feel like the Joker to me (blame it on the writing or whatever the case may be), though he did do a heck of an acting job in the end.

See that's where I disagree, "The Dark Knight" was excellent and I prefer Heath Ledger's Joker over Jack Nicholson's. I do believe it was an Oscar-worthy performance (and not because Ledger died) but his portrayal of a disturbed dark villain opposed to Nicholson's comic book type character was ten times better. IMO Christian Bale's Batman was better than any Batman from the past movies

I completely agree with this. The Tim Burton films were, well, Burtonized versions of Batman. Not as 'comic' as the TV series, but not as 'serious' or sadistic as they could be. They were good movies, too. But, they did not have the emotional roller coaster and drama as "The Dark Knight".

I thought it was all hype...until I actually saw the movie. It was much, MUCH, better then I ever thought. "Iron man" was a good comic book/super hero movie too...But, "The Dark Night" blew it away for a very good reason - it's on another level.

I actually agree with your statements here, and it's the exact reason why I didn't like the film. No, I don't want an Adam West style Batman movie, but I just thought it was a bit too dark and sadistic. I'm in the camp that feels the film should have been rated R. I loved Batman Begins and thought that it was one of the best Batman movies to date, but this just had a complete different feeling to it. I guess that's why I liked Nicholson's Joker better, I like true "comic book movies" and not emotional crime dramas with graphics depictions of death. Again, Ledger did a hell of a job playing a homicidal maniac (maybe he deserves an Oscar for that), but I still didn't feel like I saw the Joker on screen again.

Out of this year's mainstream wide releases, I too must give the nod to The Dark Knight.
And believe it or not, 'Speed Racer' is not that far behind.

That's such an omnibus term.
TDK is a true "comic book movie", it just depends on which era of Batman you are looking at.
I thought TDK carried on in the harder-edged tone set by Begins, just this time out the film actually had a script to match the ambience.
As someone else said, it's The Godfather 2 of comic flicks!

Batman has always been a dark and brooding hero (except for the 60's). TDK was dead on in the way it showed him and the Joker and Two Face. It is a shame when people say Batman, the first thing that comes to mind is the BAM, POW crap of the Adam West and Burt Ward shows of the 60's.
I have been in to comics since 1970 and for the post part all the Batman movies have been lacking, with Begins being the best up till TDK.
People hated the first Hulk movie, cause they thought he could fly, he wasn't flying he was leaping like in the comics. Luckly the new Hulk movie stayed close to the books to while adding a little of the tv show in.
Ironman was a good movie, followed the books.
Speedracer I really didn't care for.
The New Indiana Jones movie was very uneven, it was good and the same time a big dissapointment.

Haven't seen many movies since September, planning on going to see The spirit this weekend.

Benjamin Button (from Froy's youtube link) is a very good movie (and this is coming from someone who dislike Brad Pitt). While both BB and Dark Knight are good movies from their genres and are so different, they do both have one thing in common - both are at least 1/2 too long.

Allowing it to be R could have allowed them more freedom to dive even deeper in Joker's psyche...the "do you know why I use a knife..." sorta scenes. It would have kept some of the kids away but it may have been a better 'adult' movie. The same goes for the Wolverine movie...they could make the violence 'violent', instead of toned down for the kids.

The post in question, by Roboto750, thinks the film merits an "R" as is.
