To celebrate their upcoming trek together, STYX and REO Speedwagon teamed up to record a new single, “Can't Stop Rockin',” co-written by REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin and STYX's Tommy Shaw. “Can't Stop Rockin'” makes its radio debut in March and will be available for download
When we didn't think the current lineup could stoop to a lower level, they manage to surprise us once again... Now you have to team up with another band to record a new single? How pathetic is that? It is either a desperate attempt at some form of airplay, an indication that Styx is not talented enough to record a single by themselves, or a desperate cry for help...
(or maybe JY in his infantile ways, has to have something out there to "compete" with 100 years from now...)

I really don't see this as "stooping to a lower level". I think this tour is something that both groups were excited about, so Tommy and Kevin came together to do a song in comemoration of it.
Styx [or at least JY] have shown little interest in coming up with new material, so I don't think that makes them desperate to get airplay, considering they're only getting half credit, because if they WERE desperate they'd put more effort into actually coming up with something for radio to play. And I don't think it's a lack of talent either, it's most likely a lack of motivation to get the work done on a new single/album
And it most certainly is not JY trying to compete with Dennis, as Tommy/Kevin are the one getting credit on this one. If JY wanted to lay into DDY with new material the best way he could have done that would have been to actually write a few new songs himself [but since his stuff isn't usually marketable I can see why he doesn't push himself to do so].

Why is trying something different, co-writing, or collaborating "pathetic?" Seriously, I want to know.
There's only one thing about this thread that strikes me as pathetic, and it has nothing to do with Tommy Shaw or Kevin Cronin.

Personally, I'd like to see anything new from Tommy. Not so much interested in anything new Styx-wise, but something by Tommy and Kevin could be intriguing. Would be interesting to see who all plays on it.

Whether you are a fan of the recent releases from Styx or not, Tommy has penned all the songs since Cyclorama.

I'm trying to keep an open mind but the title isn't exactly promising. Sounds like something Spinal Tap might come up with...

I hate to keep bringing this up Zan, but are you sure you don't have a calendar or Maxim feature coming out? I'd be willing to part with a couple of bucks for more photos....

LOL, not to be a jerk, but that's the very first thought that crossed my mind when I read that. I hope it's good, but it's hard for me to think that a song entitled "Can't Stop Rockin'" is gonna be anything other than a piece of work product to try to hang the advertising for a tour on. I guess we'll see . . . who knows, it might be the best song from either band in a long time. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I see nothing wrong at all with the two of them collaborating for the tour. If it is a good, rocking song maybe both bands can jam on it to close their show.
I am certainly interested in hearing how it sounds.

I'm with those who think the title sounds a bit "campy." But let's face it, that's sometimes been one of Styx's most endearing qualities is its campiness. Plus, when you think about it, isn't it appropo for these two? It really does seem like they sincerely *can't* stop rockin'. lol

But Toph, it was okay for Dennis to record with a French artist to try and rejuvenate his career? Some could say that was a desperate attempt to get airplay too..
Yes, it worked in one region in Canada, but it pretty much guaranteed he wouldn't get airplay anywhere else up here. English radio up here wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole, and hasn't touched anything else from it either.
Face it, if Dennis wouldn't have recorded 100 Years From Now without Eric Lapointe, he wouldn't have the success he did in Quebec.

Some of the forum members here only post so that they can hear the clicking sound of their own keyboards. Please refer to the title of this thread, and everything will make more sense.

A bit too early to pass judgement since I doubt any of us have heard this. I'm hopeful this will at least be better than "Just Be" which I never liked.
So we'll see ... but pathetic? Hardly. Why is it pathetic for two artists who are also friends to collaborate? I didn't see any cries of heresy when some of the Jack Blades co-penned stuff wound up on Cyclorama.

Styx, REO Speedwagon Co-Write Song About the Beatles
Posted by Evan Schlansky on March 1st, 2009
"Raise your hand if you love REO Speedwagon, or still listen to the mighty Styx.
Okay, now put your hand back down. People can see you.
To promote their upcoming joint tour, the two 80’s bands have teamed up to record a new single, “Can’t Stop Rockin’,” co-written by REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin and Styx’s Tommy Shaw. “Can’t Stop Rockin’” will make its radio debut this month, and will also be available for download.
The new song pays homage to “four boys from England.” Now who could that be?
Here’s a sample lyric:
The whole thing started 1963
Young girls screamin’
Black and white TV
I was so ready, for something to set me free
Those four boys from England, singin’ right to me
And:
When I was lost, they were there to hold my hand
When everyone said no, no, no, they said yeah, yeah, yeah
The “Can’t Stop Rockin’ Tour,” which also features 38 Special (”Caught Up in You,” “If I’d Been the One”), is being billed as a “Rock and Roll Stimulus Package,” with ticket prices as low as 13.50 in most markets. The tour launches May 20th in New Mexico. Dates can be found at Styxworld.com
Says Kevin Cronin, “The world is going through a weird phase, and everybody needs music now more than ever. We all need to join our friends, pool our resources, combine our energies, because there is power in people coming together. That spirit has brought REO and Styx together to write, record and tour together, and celebrate it all with the greatest fans in America.”
Amen, brother."
Doesn't sound as awful as it did before.

Hey, I've no issue at all with the collaberation.
I can't say the Beatles reference makes any difference. here's hoping they have a great time with it.

Point: I have *always* loved "Just Be." Just because it's mellow, doesn't mean it sucks. The melody is haunting, the harmonies are fantastic, and the message is poignant.
I much prefer that to say, "Waiting for Our Time" or even "Witness" for as far as Tommy efforts go. I like both those tunes, but "Just be" is much more powerful, for ME.

I'm not too impressed by the lyrics but then again I actually need the music to know HOW it's going to be sung which can make all of the difference. [Like Jonas Psalter: uninspired lyrics, but put through a good tune sounded great]

Zan, it's OK to like it ... we all like what we like, and hate what we hate. No one has to agree. Tommy's done some fine, more mellow work. I don't love "Everything All The Time" either, but it's light years ahead of "Just Be" for me. I'm not a lyrics guy, I tend to listen more to the music and it's just a snooze on "Just Be". It plods. The harmonies are fine - no argument there, but it doesn't help anything. Can't polish that turd in my eyes

But "Just Be" is still better than anything on What If ...
For me, his songs off of Cyclorama and the later Styx stuff after that have been mediocre at best. Influence is fantastic, so I get the feeling TS has hit a bit of a creative rut when it comes to writing songs. He seems to be better writing with people these days, so I'm all for a good collaboration. Not the biggest REO fan, but I'll remain optimisitic about this one.

Are you referring to "Ebony and Ivory"? That was one of the WORST songs that either of those guys ever did. Not a good comparison.

I don't agree. Although I hate REO, I see it as something fun for the band to promote a tour. MANY acts have recorded singles with guests on them. So what? Um, didn't Dennis sing some song with a French guy? Big deal.

What the hell is this article? Those lyrics are from Can't Stop Rockin' off REO's Building The Bridge album. It was released in 1996.
