"Phoenix" was the first Asia album I bought and after hearing it, I am thinking about buying more. Can someone recommend some of of the previous albums that would be good to start with.
Thanks

Asia, Alpha and Astra.. the John Wetton Albums.. Oh also, "Then And Now"
Don't bother with the John Payne era Asia unless you want to be put to sleep.. BORING!

Their first album "Asia" was the classic with all of the best known hits. They pretty much fell off the face of the earth after that.

Phoenix is awesome. They got good stuff after the first album too, ignore Kansas up there and follow the first 2 posters' advice

I thought the Aura album was good from about 10 years ago.

Also worth checking out is Wetton-Downes "Icon" that came out about 5 years ago. Sounds more like "classic" Asia than most of their catalogue.
Personally, I like their second album "Alpha" but I know a lot of people that don't. Most people think they fizzled after their self title debut. After "Alpha", they never had a consistent lineup. One of the biggest draws of this band was that it featured classic members from classic bands (King Crimson, Yes, ELP). After these "members" left, I basically thought "What's the point?"

I actually like both versions of Asia. Both have had a bad cd or two (Astra and Arena). John Payne is a great singer with a lot emotion in his voice. That alone was one of the reasons I stayed with the later line ups.
