New Damn Yankees

Rockpages.gr did an exclusive interview with Night Ranger's bassist/singer, Jack Blades. Among other things he revealed that he will most likely do a reunion studio album with Damn Yankees! Here's the excerpt:
Rockpages.gr: Jack, you wrote some material for a third Damn Yankees album that was never released. What happened?
Jack Blades: Yeah, we recorded that record and quite frankly the label was pushing us to make this album and it just didn't turn out the way we wanted it. We were using the wrong producer…everything was wrong. So, we decided not to release it because our hearts and souls weren't into this. Certain songs have turned up on Tommy's record; on my record…like "Shine On" was a song that Tommy and I wrote for the third Damn Yankees record. Ted also used some stuff for his solo album…but…there is talk of getting back together in March 2009 to record another Damn Yankees album!

Best news I've heard in awhile when it comes to Tommy. Now THAT I'd look forward to. Some of that material they wrote was not their best stuff, but I'd love to hear what DY would do in 2009.

Jack kinda fluffed over the story. I mean, they tried to replace Michael, that got messy. THey had another singer besides Tommy since Tommy was half in Styx, half in DY ... he couldn't commit to DY and it basically killed it. They had all the promo shots done. So it was good to go.

The other thing is that if I remember correctly, Ron Nevison (who was involved with the other albums as well as BNW) did that aborted DY album.

I'm sure it had something to do with the material, but at that time interpersonal relationships with DY were screwy and TS was just getting back into Styx full time.

WHY replace Cartelloni???
WHY replace Shaw??

That would've been really stupid on both parts.
Hopefully the reunion includes Cartelloni.

This is March of 09 and looking at the Styx tour there is not much time to be writing and recording with DY until maybe October. :? Ted looks like he has time but Night Rager is booked until November. I think this is an old interview.

God, if I was Cartelloni, I'd definitely jump ship to get back with DY.
Dy is one of those bands like Cheap Trick to me. Each guy has his own
personality and is integral to the band.

But LS tours nonstop, much like Styx, so he does have a steady income this way.

Not to imply that he does it just for the money :)

How selfish of Tommy denying all those Damn Yankee Roadies new cars and houses in this horrible economy (tisk tisk)

I just can't imagine Damn Yankees being enough of a draw, either on record or live, to make it worth the while of anyone involved to do it, to be honest. Guess I could be wrong, but it's really a one-hit group at best, and that hit was more than fifteen years ago. What record company or booking agent in his right mind would risk money on this, especially in this economy?

You have got to be kidding. The debut album alone had "High Enough", "Come Again", "Coming of Age", and "Runaway"...all of which I hear on the radio to this day.

Ted Nugent alone is enough of a concert draw to get a 'booking agent'...and the lure of Styx and NR and you got a concert draw.

It's silly to say they are a 'one hit' group at best that couldn't get enough people involved to tour behind, or release an album. I'd rather see DY out there right now then any of these other 80's bands that are touring right now.

Hmmm . . . see , in my market I literally never hear any of those songs, including HE. And you have to consider how much work it would take, at what pay rate per show across how many shows, to replace the income that each of the guys would need to replace the income they'd be giving up to do this. Ted keeps everything he makes less expenses. Tommy and JY earn the principal salaries less expenses, more or less. Michael is probably a side man but I'm sure he hauls in a lot of cash. Jack does all right, too, I'd bet, though NR is touring at a lower level. Put the $$ they need to make together, I don't think DY can draw that per night. I think this is why this has never happened despite many rumblings. I still believe it won't ever happen, but that's not disparagement. I actually really, really liked the first DY tour. The second one was kinda by rote IMO, but the first one was killer.

I hope all is well.

Saw them once on first tour, they blew Bad Company away! Second tour saw twice, both shows were very lackluster. Like they were going thru the motions.

But if they had put the Styx, Damn Yankees, Night Ranger, Ted tour together all in one night, I think it'd draw and generate more income collectively than they make individually. I'd guess 30-40% of concert goers wouldn't even realize how interchangeable the groups would be. I saw the Monkees, Grass Roots, and Herman's Hermits all in the same show with the same backing band with all 3 groups. I agree it wouldn't go on forever, but one summer would make it fun. I guess there is some record deal or agent issue that prevents this from happening.

I saw them open for Bad Company as well and the feeling from everyone I talked to at that concert was the order should have been flipped around.
