I got the email and I am glad to see the video game Rock Band finally get some Styx AND REO Speedwagon tracks on it. It will be downloadable on XBOX live and PS3's network, I am very glad to be playing a Styx song or two.
I know the songs are Renegade, Too Much Time on my Hands, and Blue Collar Man. Not sure about the Speedwagon songs but I know they have Can't Stop Rockin' on there as well.

that's what the "top secret" thing from a while back was. re-recording of the songs for the game.
no money for the record companies or Dennis the menace

Wait, these are re-recordings of the songs? I guess that's how Styx can get away with it without giving Dennis a dime, hmm..

That is about as low as you can get....rerecording songs so you don't have to pay money....
And I thought it was DDY who was the one that tried to screw others out of money..

A lot of bands do it. Journey did. This is pretty common practice.

the article says NOTHING about WHO re-recorded these songs. it's safe to assume that they have been done by studio musicians (which is most likely the case). we all know that the beatles rockband is being released on 09/09/09. somehow, i doubt the band went in and re-recorded everything themselves, considering the fates of john and george. let's stop accusing styx of going behind ddy's back here until we have some real answers. not everything is a conspiracy theory. besides, this is good for every member of styx, past and present. perhaps one of these days, songs like Lady, CSA, fooling yourself etc will make it into a future ROCKBAND.
relax... take it easy

There's a lot of bands that have others "re-record" for Rock Band.. CCR is a prime example.
Besides, Tommy Shaw was listed at the song writer for TMTOMH, BCM and Renegade, so how is that taking money out of Dennis's pockets?
Still pretty cool to see some Styx and REO stuff on Rockband..

But that was wrong too. Journey did it to take royalties out of Perry's pocket. I can only assume Styx is doing the same thing to take royalies out of DDY's pocket. In both cases it is wrong.

Songwriting royalties don't stop because someone re-records a song. Mechanical royalties won't be there but if you have your name on any type of writing credit, you're getting paid as Steve Perry has for any song on Revelation with his name in the writing credits. It might not be much but you can't just remove a person's name once they've credited.
Mechanical royalties are a different story of course. If Dennis Didn't write certain songs, only playing on them, he loses out on those royalties then as Perry did for the re-recorded version of Faithfully.

okay, first off, everyone on here is an idiot who talks about stuff they don't have a clue about.
the songs were re-recorded by Styx, even though Dennis didn't write the songs he still gets money when those recordings are used because his playing is on them.
same deal with the record company, they get money from songs recorded on their label
think of Lady 95.

yeah, cause Dennis never put only his name on songs the other guys in Styx mostly wrote.

there are a lot of variables that come into play here- first of all, rockband payed for the licensed use of the song. they can bring in their own people to re-record it to suit their needs. particularly, if band members are deceased (nirvana, ramones, beatles etc) also, songs that have heavy keyboards (which ddy songs tend to have) might not work as well as guitar oriented tunes. keep this in mind- the instruments used in rockband are guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. keyboard heavy songs will be difficult to reproduce and mighthave to be tweaked so that the keyboard parts can double as guitar parts. and if styx did the actual re-recording of the songs? so what- even better!!! we know that the songs will kick ass.
for all of you who have your panties in a wad, read on
http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135419
most people are confident the songs will sound good. it's not a conspiracy against ddy. perhaps one day we'll have more styx tunes to choose from, but for now, i'm glad we have 3!

Can you elaborate a little more? Sharon Osbourne had Ozzie re-record his solo albums with different musicians so that Daisley and Kerslake wouldn't get royalties anymore. The two guys sued and lost in Federal court. I think only songwriting credits would apply on re-recordings. obviously if Dennis were on the re-recording then he gets paid, but I thought we we were talking about him not being on them at all.

you just said what I said. Dennis doesn't have song writing credits on those songs and he won't be on the new recordings and he won't get paid.

aw, no JY stuff? seriously, no Miss America, or Great White Hope? Maybe someday
I'm not too bummed that Dennis stuff didn't get included because most of his stuff is very keyboard heavy, leaving anyone but the singer high and dry. I mean can you imagine playing CSA and having to listen to two full verses without being able to do anything but listen to your [probably crappy] singer go at it? Wait, just realized they could have done DDY and JY in one sweep: Lorelei! That one is definitely going to have to be added some time down the road.
btw, I know it's never going to happen, but Man of Miracles would be a kick-ass song to play for all parts.

Thank you for asking.
Let's see.It was a situation of the planets alligning kinda thingie,so a couple of days maybe.
The other day I finished Proust, the one about the little angry boy. There is no pictures in it,so I don't think you'll be interested.
Then i read an article in Classic rock on Freddie Mercury.
There is a bit about Sid Vicious and Freddie being in the same room.
Sid says to Freddie,'Ahh still teaching ballet to the masses?(Fred was wearing his ballet outfit,if you remember that)
Freddie says,'Ohh Mr. Ferocious,still.... .
Hilarious stuff.
Then I come in here and check out this great Styx forum, and read people like your's participation, and if we look at your contributions,
well they are kinda 'the little angry boy' responses.
Then I put your name together with the other stuff, and there you have it.
Riveting ehh?

Exactly. They're not taking anything from Dennis. Anyone who is saying so does not know what they are talking about honestly. Songwriters get the mechanical royalties, not the musicians who performed on the songs.

I had the SAME THOUGHT about Miss America. That would be a killer Rock Band tune... it really would. I just don't think it's mainstream enough for Rock Band.

Ok, there is an argument here because......??? I am a DeYoung fan (duh), and I see no problem with this at all. It is promotional for the upcoming tour with Styx/Reo. These are Tommy penned/sung songs. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Dennis other than he performed on the original recorded versions. What is the problem?
If this gooses sales for the Styx catalog, they will all benefit, including Dennis.
I certainly see no reason to get heated up about the band getting on the Rock Band bandwagon and promoting their touring act.
Another clear example of Current Styx doing its thing and Dennis doing his. Something for fans of each, or both, to celebrate.

Completely agree with you Bugsy, as I too am a big DDY fan.
On a side note, I think this is the smartest marketing decision that Styx has made in a real long time. Letting any teen who has PS3/360 and Rock Band sample their stuff while at the same time naming the package after their upcoming tour is just genius in my mind. Now they just need to follow that up with a new album next year, and they should be back on top.

Styx, REO, and Journey need to get on Singstar, which to me is a little more fun to play.
