Great interview. I find it fascinating that the other band members don't want Dennis back in the group? he still sings like a champion, and much better than any other clone they get for them. This is one hell of an odd situation.

They are just too far apart now for a reunion to ever happen. Both sides following their own path, quite happily, it seems.

Of course, it is Styx that is denying the obvious: a reunion with DDY would instantly become a huge concert tour. They can continue down their current path forever...as long as they're happy playing for 30 minutes opening up for Meatloaf. Look how Journey was resurrected when they got that Perry clone in the band...Gowan may be a great keyboardist, but his voice just isn't as good as DDY's. If Tommy decides to fly the coop too, then it's lights out for Styx, except for playing backyard birthday parties.

Of course, these splits aren't surprising. There are plenty of bands out there who have multiple versions touring at the same time, like Wishbone Ash and Sweet, because the original members can't stand each other.

1) It was DDY that opened for Meatloaf, not Styx.

2) Yes the Sweet does have two touring versions, and thats partially true, but two of the four original members are also dead, AND one of the versions of Sweet has never toured in North America.

I believe the bass player's version is in California.
The guitar player Andy Scott is in England.
Now 15 or so years ago I saw Sweet here in Toronto and I'm 99,9% sure it was Scott's version.
The bass player's version just toured some gigs here in Canada,this summer.
Actually saw the original Sweet in the seventies and it was excellent.

Actually Gg8.. you're right I now recall reading a blurb in the Edmonton paper about Sweet playing at least Canada (maybe they haven't toured "America" ).. but wasn't that with the original lead singer? He didn't die until 97..

That article I read would have been around 94-95 come to think of it..

Andy Scott's Sweet.When I saw them, it was without Brian C.I think he was too sick at that point.He did though, have his own The Sweet going earlier though.That may have been BC Sweet.

Well now in a thread above this, they're talking about Shaw Blades doing another album, and everyone from Damn Yankees wanting to get back together, so is that like "Tommy flying the coop"?

Honestly though, creativity seems to be stagnant with Styx, and I wouldn't blame Tommy taking some time off to do other projects that could yield better results than whats happening with Styx. It would be pretty sad if Styx really were creatively dead considering what they were able to produce before.

On topic with this interview, I always enjoy DDY's humor and hopefullness, saying the band "might" get back together, but it's in their hands. I think depending on the success of Tommy's proposed upcoming projects [or whether or not they come to fruition at all], will decide on the possibility of a reunion. If Tommy finds success outside of Styx, he might as you say, fly the coop, and a reunion will then be completely dead [as I guess will be the band as a whole]. Or if he comes back to Styx, and has nothing else better to do he might just say "F it" and a reunion will come to be. But everything is just speculation at this point. Nothing is nowhere near concrete yet, and the seeing stone has a way of guessing wrong.

What is always forgotten, or put on the back burner, with these discussions of "other projects" is the bottom line -- the money. No one who is currently in Styx could ever hope or dream to make the kind of coin he is making right now in this band on the nostalgia tour circuit. So any projects Tommy will pursue outside of his life in Styx would always, always be secondary to whatever Styx is doing to continue to make him money. At this stage of their lives any of them would be fools to drop what is giving them so much money to take up something that is simply a vanity, or fun, or extra project. I absolutely do not see this ever happening.

Tommy will not "fly the coop" unless he could do something that satisfies him creatively AND makes him what he is now currently earning with the Styx tours

This is true - to be a clone, you need to be somewhat like someone else. Gowan in no way can claim to be able to sing anywhere near as good as Dennis. Dennis' keyboard work is on a much higher level that Gowan's also, so it can't be considered that Gowan is a "clone". I think "Wannabee" is a better term. Wants to be, but never will be, that is.....

Taking nothing away from Denny's key abilities - he is very, very strong on keys - Gowan is superior - especially NOW that Dennis barely ever even plays anymore. I can also assure you that Gowan in no way "wannabe" like DDY. You can believe anything you like of course, but it is pure fantasy.
