Can someone explain to me the meaning behind this song?

Tommy tried to get it on the Kilroy album, but Dennis rejected it.

Dennis came back a month or so later and stated if it was Suzanne that was packing the heat then she could bust him out of jail in the video & movie produced by David Glass?.

Tommy said that was cool, but then Tommy's 4th wife caught wind of it and was pissed.

This led to another divorce fo Tommy Shaw.

He then just decided to scrap the song for Cold War.

Tommy later decided to put it on his solo debut.

At the time Tommy explained that he was driving through the desert with a friends of his - I think it may have been Jim Cahill in fact - and they were talking about what kind of girls they liked, and I think Tommy mentioned he liked girls who had their own thing going on, women who had a career and weren't just good-looking toys so to speak. And he coined the phrase "girls with guns" to describe such women. I'm paraphrasing, it's been a long time since I listened to any of his interviews from that era. But I'm pretty sure that's the gist of it.

I hope all is well.

A "girl with guns" is an assertive, self-reliant woman. She doesn't fit the old stereotype of a weak, naive girl swooning for any guy that shows interest in her. The other references to guns ("shoot straight", "aim for the heart", "she's the target now") are appropriately keeping with the analogy.

Sterling is right, consistent when TS gave a similar response to MTV's hottie Martha Quinn, when asked the same question.

Kind of summarizes the difference between Dennis and Tommy.

Dennis's first solo song is an introspective look at lost innocence and childhood memories - a real in depth examination of his life to date. Tommy is advice on how to get laid...

Maybe if Dennis wrote more songs about getting laid, he wouldn't have so many uptight, humorless plebs as fans...

But wait - wasn't "Grove of Eglantine" about...*shudder*

never mind. Let's just pretend that song never happened.

You're right...introspective and in depth, he is.

Oh, man.

I can't undo what has been done now.

I'm here to say, as I stand before you this evening, that both of these songs suck - real bad. But not as bad as City Slicker!!!

Maybe Dennis only get laid when he writes songs about Suzette hence the vast amount of songs about her.

Ha! I like both songs. GwG is bouncy and has a good melody. DM is just a beautiful song on all levels. Agree about City Slicker.

Actually I'd say it speaks more to the lack of mental capacity of Tommy Shaw fans to understand anything beyond the rudementary lyrics that are so prevelent in most of his songs...

Where as I might agree with you on GWG and well What If was pretty much coke fueled, I think you should go back and listen to Ambition and 7DZ.. Nothing really rudementary about the lyrics on either one of those cds..

Don't go using logic in an argument. That will get you no where with this crowd.

Girls has some good songs on it besides the title track, Lonely School, Kiss Me Hello and Free to Love You. But the cd is very over produced. Too much echo/reverb.

I noticed GWG was re-issued last year on CD thru Universal Music. I ordered it and had not listened to it in years. I forgot how good it was (at least to me). I find GWG to be an enjoyable listen.

Indeed!!! those are all great songs, I personally don't skip any.

Compared to todays standards, that old original CSR pressing sounds darn good!!! I personally like the echo/reverb. Even the Absolute isn't half bad with some bass boosted that didn't hurt, not terrible at all.

Alot better than anything "loud" put out today.

That reissue is terrible sounding. I spoke with the guys who worked on it and they smiley eq'd it. They are not qualified mastering engineers by these ears. They did say they "tweaked it" and it is not good work. They should have just done a straight reissue.

The first remaster attempt by Tommy and Eddy Shreyer is not half bad, but I still prefer the original pressing. Alot more depth in the mastering.
