In a round about way that is my point also. Styx fans have been taking grief for years. We're good at it. Most of us have had to defend our love or liking of Styx music at one time or the other. I have no illusions that my dislike of Styx's ballads will change the opinions of those that like them. But when someone says they love Babe, I don't tell them they are pieces of s*** and that it sucks to be them. That's the main point. Like what you like and let others like what they like.

Not to get in the argument...but the critics...like Rolling Stone are pieces of shit. Who cares what they say or said. They can have their opinion, but they were always much different than mine.

Not that I would defend any music critic or have them affect what I choose to listen to but, Styx and it's management at the time didn't really handle critics as well as they could have. Not that I am saying it is 100% their fault but I think that they made some errors that got them on the bad side of some critics.

True enough, but critics also hated Zeppelin, Journey, the Eagles, Black Sabbath, Rush, Queen, ELP, Jethro Tull . . . and in fact, almost every successful band of that era. That means absolutely nothing. Critics were pushing a very specific agenda that had nothing in the world to do with what normal people like. Let's face it, critics liked the Ramones . . . but most real people hate them, which is why they failed miserably in the real-life marketplace. There are a few exceptions like U2 or Springsteen, but for the most part critical acceptance is the consolation prize for real-life failure.

The irony is this: Styx was uncool in the eyes of critics . . . who are some of the uncoolest people ever to walk the planet. Seriously, we're going to let a massive geek like Dave Marsh tell us what's cool? I think I'll just stick with listening to what makes me happy, and those people can continue to go fuck themselves, as always.

Amen! Styx' problems with the press were self-inflicted to no small degree, that's for sure. Not that critics would have otherwise liked the band, but the band's extreme defensiveness did not - and still does not - serve it well in that regard.
