That you liked styx back in the day? It's no secret that they were not the most popular band back then so just curious if any of you guys had to hide the fact that you liked the band back then. In case your wondering where i got the idea for this thread it's from re watching that episode of that 70's show which featured the aforemeantioned band.

I didn't become a Styx fan until 1995(at the age of 17); so, I can't speak for back in the day, but the funny thing is, when I first discovered the band, I had no idea it wasn't "cool" to like them. With songs like "Suite Madame Blue", "Crystal Ball", "Renegade", "Too Much Time On My Hands", and yes, even "Miss America", I didn't realize the band had the kind of reputation it does. In all honesty, growing up, I didn't hear much about Styx, and none of my friends had ever really heard of them. I didn't get cable till a late age, and I guess I missed out on whatever MTV life they had. It wasn't until I started researching the band in music reference books that I realized how they were viewed, at least by most critics. I suppose "Mr. Roboto" should have been a clue, but most people I knew just thought it was one of those novelty '80s songs that kids roller skated to.

Making some huge assumptions, I would guess that it was probably cool to like Styx between the 1975 to 1979 period.. After that, they were probably considered too commercial to be cool, but the critics NEVER thought it was cool to like Styx.

Didn't have to lie, but always had to defend the choice, especially after Kilroy.

Being 13 when Grand Illusion came out, I thought it was cool to be a Styx fan then and didn't have anyone to dissuade me. That was the last time I can remember not catching s*** for being a Styx fan. I never cared though.

The current lineup is not Styx.
It's 2 guys running around with a chip on there shoulder use-ing the name STYX.
Gowan is an enabler a guy who's solo career was only good in Canada
He was like Danny Gans a guy who was only famous in a 50 mile radius of his act.
Ask anyone on the streets do you know Larry Gowan and the answer will be who?
Ask do you know Dennis DeYoung the answer will be yea the STYX guy.

It's a shame spite drives people, case and point Tommy Shaw and James Young
Do you see Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford blasting Phil Collins for having a second career?
Answer NO they gave him his space to create, Tommy Shaw said if you do this or that IM gone
Screw you Tommy Shaw without Dennis DeYoung your still at the beef and bowl in Alabama.
Get you head out of your ass . All you have left is cover cds and 1000 goofs showing up to see you sing with Gowan.

At this point all that's left is to reunite and play for the real Styx fans not the 25 year old that have no clue what they are seeing. And yes the flu is gone and Im back

It is clear that the current version of Styx has a massive case of writer's block - especially Tommy and JY. Half of Tommy's contributions of Cyclo were ex-S-B or damn yankees stuff. JY resurrected a older song in These Are The Times (quite well actually), and since then TS has written a grand total of 2 new songs- JB and EATT. When was Cyco? 2001? Only 2 new songs in only decade? Clearly they don't have the chops to write songs anymore. Again, I go back to the point I made a few days ago - there is no vision with the current members of the band.

I agree with ya Toph. But Tommy and JY are writing now for a new album, so let's hope we hear from them soon...

The band does need to write some new songs and either put out a cd or sale in digital format. I like Styx, but the same old songs are starting to be a bore in concert.
And yes the same can be said with DDY. His new cd did nothing here in the states, and he has played nothing new from it either. Shame it is a great cd.

Although I never lied about being a fan, I certainly remember that around the time of Pieces of Eight was when people started to bad mouth the band. Up to Grand Illusion, they had a good rep as an art rock band. The local rock station in Toronto (Q107) even listed GI as the 8th best album of all time in 1978.

Pieces of Eight, although today comes off as a rocker album, back then it was considered more commercial, and that was when Styx started to be lumped in with Journey, Foreigner etc., comparisons to which even today I don't like and don't agree with.

After Cornerstone, forget it, the rep of the band went out the window with Babe.

nope never had to lie at all....most of the people i was around loved them.....remeber, they were voted the most popular band in america in a 1979 gallop poll so i dont know why anyone would have to lie about being a fan.

when mtv hit in 1981 they were one of the first artist to have their videos played and they were on heavy rotation and everybody i knew liked the stuff from paradise theatre just fine.

when kilroy was released mr. roboto was somewhat polarizing amongst thsoe i knew but that was about it.

Apples and oranges, Froy. By the time Face Value came out, Tony and Mike already had solo albums (A Curious Feeling and Smallcreep's Day respectively). No one knew Phil's solo career would take off.

AND all of the principals in Genesis were major songwriters - Mike and Tony especially. They all made money after 1977 or so. While everyone in Styx made money, Dennis got the lion's share (arguably followed by Tommy) due to songwriting.

If you read interviews with Tony or Mike, they didn't necessarily expect Phil to come back after Invisible Touch, let alone for IT. Genesis is a completely unique situation compared to nearly every band. Do they squabble? I bet they do, but at the end of the day Phil, Mike, and Tony are genuinely friends (well documented).

There's actually someone at work on an REO book already. Journey or Foreigner either one would be a great story, but oh my God, the Journey thing is like pulling teeth, LOL. Or GETTING your teeth pulled.
