I have to kinda agree about Petty.. I like a couple of his songs, but it's just amazing to me how much of his stuff is all over rock radio when it's not even that good. He has a decent rock voice I guess(he wouldn't make it today), but just too many unremarkable songs get airplay.

I strongly disagree with Billy Joel, though. It's not cool to like him, and never has been(sound somewhat familiar?), but he wrote some fine material. Radio has run most of his hits into the ground, true, but you can't deny a lot of them were crafted pretty well.

Springsteen is a bore, but talented lyricist..

Froy go back and listen to the 'Turnstiles' album. Great, great record. The songs aren't overplayed and the lyrics are wonderful.

Froy go back and listen to the 'Turnstiles' album. Great, great record. The songs aren't overplayed and the lyrics are wonderful.

turnstiles, piano man, 52nd street, songs from the attic........ all brilliant. even glass houses and the nylon curtain. after that, joel loses me. but he'll always be one of my favs.
and say what you will about dylan & springsteen's voices, but their songs have had a profound effect on rock n roll. some of the best lyrics EVER written.
bowie was pretty much responsible for the whole glam rock genre. a true innovator. you might not be a fan, but give the man his due.

Bowie was a genius (I say "was" because since Scary Monsters, he's been considerably less of a genius). Bowie's influence can be seen in everyone from Bono to, yes, Dennis Deyoung (who even said so when he was guest VJ on MTV).

Billy Joel - The Stranger is one of the greatest albums of all time. He sort of falls flat after Nylon Curtain.

If you really want to look at overrated solo artist, here's my list:
1. Elton John
2. Elton John
3. Elton John
4. Elton John
5. Elton John

there is no way elton is over rated. sure, he's put out crap, but listen to goodbye yellow brick road or madman across the water. genius stuff.

Just about anything Elton did pre 1976 was gold. It's been pretty hit or miss since then. What's really noteworthy about Elton is just how many killer album tracks he had in his heyday.
