Stemming from Toph's topic about songs that should have been singles, does anyone else think "Light Up" would have been a better lead single than "Lorelei" for "Equinox"? Not asking if you like "Light Up"(remember, big hits aren't always the best tracks on an album), but think about it; "Light Up" flows a lot more like "Lady" than "Lorelei" does, and "Lady" had just been their big breakthrough song.. It only seems natural that they would have followed it up with something that was a little more similar. Let's be honest, the subject matter probably would have been pretty popular for the times, too.

not to me....lorelei has always been one of my favortie styx songs.....i'm not crazy about the washed in massive reverbs ending on the album but live it is killer. but studio or live it is a better song than light up.

lorelei for the time sounded more modern and like they were moving forward where as light up with the big organ and melody during the verses sounded more dated even in 1975 compared to lorelei.

Light Up sounds too much like a Wooden Nickel song. Lorelei is good and it did the job - kept them on the charts while they waited for the next big one - 2 years later.

Equinox is a kick ass album all the way around. It deserves the credit POE gets.

Yes it does but mother dear & lonely child are the only songs that blow on the entire album.

Lorelei was actually one of the first songs JY & DDY wrote. I think they wrote it around the time of the first record and threw it on Equinox to finish it up. I was always more familiar with Light Up as it had more radio exposure, at least where I lived as a kid (Detroit as a little kid and even Knoxville later on).

Did you know that the original title of the song "Lorelei" was actually called "Grande" ? Dennis explained how he came up with the title "Lorelei" in the tv interview I had with him. I thought it was very interesting only because I thought it was actually named after a woman in Chicago. He needed a name with 3 syllables for the song to sound right.

I love that song :)

That was a good interview, Suite! :D

I love the multi-layered harmonies in Lorelei. If it was a last minute add-on to this album, then they chose wisely.

I have my tv shows on DVD, I don't know how to post them to You Tube and if there was a way to edit me out, I would. I also have my interview with JY in which he talked very nice about Dennis and even said him by name.

"Lorelei" took a while to grow on me, but I do prefer it to "Light Up". It rocks and has some pretty cool keyboard, but it just doesn't seem like it was a logical choice to follow the success of "Lady" with. I can kinda see why it was a last minute/add on sort of track. It's fun, but the lyrics aren't the greatest the guys ever came up with.
