Personally, I believe Styx was at their best performing live around the time of Grand Illusion and before. Since Paradise they have been pretty much the same, at leas to me.

KF: You said something in your last answer that I wanted to hit upon. In 2004, you had been out of the band a second time and Paul and Gene asked you to come back. Was this an easy decision for you?

ES: Well, Tim, I look at it this way. Sometimes some of those things -- to me they are personal. I don't necessarily need to share all of my emotions or sentiments about every little thing I do.

Think of it like an ex-wife or ex-girlfriend that you decide to get back together with. Are you going to want to tell everybody if you have an on-and-off again relationship with somebody? Do you want to tell everybody what you went through? Not necessarily. Maybe your personal friends or your family. But for everybody else...to me, the bottom line is that I play drums for a living and that's what I want to do. That's what I've always wanted to do from the time I was a kid. And that's what I've been blessed and fortunate enough to be able to do.

One of the hard things to learn to do is to understand the politics that go along with being in a band. It's not easy. It sucks sometimes. The politics and business side of things is what makes it very difficult. It's what eats a lot of people up and chews them up and spits them out, because they can't deal with the emotional roller coaster and all the business side of things. It's a very tough business. And you know, think about this. A band -- you can take something from nothing, creating songs and an entity, if you will, and all of the sudden turn that from nothing in a garage into a multimillion dollar business. That's the potential of a band. Four young kids starting off in their basement and all of the sudden they come up in the right time, right place with the right music, and all of the sudden it
blows up and becomes huge. And now there's a multimillion dollar corporation or business, if you will. Of course, if you're fortunate enough to have success. Those are the exceptions rather than the rules. Most bands don't reach that success and most musicians don't really make much money, or very few do.

Michigan, did you read part one of the interview as well? It is a really good interview with him. Singer is one of the seemingly good dudes in the music world. I just posted that clip there because I was curious to what everyone's thought was on the current band. I saw them when they were touring with REO and Journey a few years back and thought they put on a helleva show and I loved Cyclorama. Then they did the covers album which I thought was terrible. I also saw Dennis DeYoung solo and he put on an amazing show.

I just posted that clip there because I was curious to what everyone's thought was on the current band. You must not listen to a lot of music. Eric Singer has played drums for Lita Ford, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, KISS (Twice), Gary Moore, Badlands, Brian May, and Union. So yeah he's been around and is a damn fine drummer.

That's basically what happened to STYX. By the time Grand Illusion came out, they were on top and they rode the wave for a few years. Were they the flavor of the week, month, year? - yes. Were they a better band then? - nope.

STYX is no longer on top of the world. In fact, they have become a guilty pleasure for me. I usually don't tell people when I am about to go see them. But are they a better band now than they were 33 years ago? - you bet!

These guys have figured out who they are, what they want to do and how to do it.

eric singer is right from strictly a quality and tightness of the band standpoint. i've thought that for a long time.

todd and gowan and incredible musicians along with a clean and sober tommy makes for a powerful band....it doesnt mean that it is the band i prefer but they are a better performing band now.

Wow! The new Styx is the best ever? I thought the old Styx was pretty good, but this version is even better. I can't wait to hear all the great music they're going to put out. I'm sure these new songs will be better too since the band is better. It's going to be wonderful. Then they can retire all those old songs they got lucky with in 1972, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1983 and 1990 when they caught lightning in a bottle.

If goofy Gowan the impersonator would have had some scruples he would have said NO THANKS that's Dennis DeYoung's spot I don't want it.
You would have seen the band stay in tact just like Aerosmith. But no his solo career was shit going no place and he was an opportunistic fool who took the job and has ruined a once great band.
Dennis was performing just fine no different then Phil Collins doing songs other than STYX songs so what.
Shaw did ZENs Young did Wolves and Dennis is not allowed to do his thing? NO way. This was all about money and when Dennis said he would not split the money made from the VW commercial Gowan the opportunistic fool got a 10 year job out of it.

Dennis didn't perform adequately for the Styx corporation. Styx found someone who could handle the job requirements of touring. Gowan's solo career has always been more than enough for a very comfortable lifestyle for him. He made the band better. All of Dennis's drama is gone, which eliminated a lot of stress for the other band members which allows them to live better and perform well.
