Hello:

This past Sunday we devoted a very special episode of Long Live Rock to the Top 10 Bands That Should Be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, But Aren't. We compiled the list from a straight popular vote from fans online, and then we counted them down and debated the merits and weaknesses of each band. Charlie Brusco of Alliance Artists joined us to give an industry insider's point of view about the Hall of Fame, how it works, and why so many legendary bands are excluded. Charlie manages Styx and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and he's also on the board of the Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland.

Here's our Top Ten;

10) Jethro Tull 9) ELP 8) Judas Priest 7) Styx 6) Journey 5) Alice Cooper 4) KISS 3) Deep Purple 2) Yes 1) Rush

We also had guest comments from Gregg Rolie of Journey, Dennis Dunaway from the original Alice Cooper group, and Rick Wakeman from Yes. You can listen to it at this link: http://www.wewillrockyoublog.com/2010/0 ... but-arent/

Thanks!

Good discussion and analysis, Sterling. I agree with you about Styx being probably never, ever getting in. No surprise. Of that whole list, they are by far the most hated and denigrated by the critics and press.

That was an interesting point made about putting in people/groups who might bring in large numbers of fans to the hall itself to see the exhibits that would be on display from their particular favorite. I don't see masses coming in to see The Stooges' stuff, but I do for anything from Kiss, Journey, and yeah, even Styx.

I was really excited when Charlie said the Museum is working on a Midwestern Rock exhibit that Styx will be in. No timetable for it, but it's a step in the right direction. For bands like Styx and Journey to get in, Wenner, Marsh, Landau, guys like that will have to retire and be replaced by less obviously biased people with more populist tastes. It's that simple.

Thanks!

Only Yes and Rush deserve to be in the RRHOF out of that list.
Styx was ruined by Brusco Shaw Young and Gowan so that is a dead issue
JRNY was ruined by Perry so that is over.
Kiss no way
Cooper trash

Kiss will probably get in in the next few years, they were nominated this year but not inducted. Alice Cooper as a group invented a whole genre, it is probably Alice's conservative politics that's kept that from happening. Styx has no real life shot as things stand, but it's got nothing to do with Gowan or Brusco, the ship sailed decades ago for that band and its relationship to critics and that elitist NY crowd. It's a bias against all of that type of band. All kinds of bands with replacement members get in, it's not an issue. And if it IS an issue, shouldn't that apply to Yes with their YouTube guy and Rick's son? You've got to apply a standard across the board, not selectively. That's what makes it a standard. As for the other bands, they are mosty the same bands we see over and over and over in these polls and they have all had huge careers. Why should they not be in?

Just out of curiosity, who do YOU think should be in?

Interestingly enough, even in a straight popular vote we only got a tiny handful of votes for REO. I wonder why that is?

Another group that gets deliberately shafted by the powers that be. Wenner doesn't like the group and has basically said so. He holds more sway than anyone. That's a group that, like Yes, was very innovative and by any reasonable standard it meets the stated criteria for the Hall, but of course they selectively apply a double standard where they see fit. The truth is, you have to innovate in a way that meets the tastes of that particular group of people. It's a very critic-heavy panel that votes, and critics didn't like progressive rock. That's the brutal truth about that. And the Moodies are in somewhat of a no man's land because parts of the career could be seen as progressive, parts of it as radio pop . . . but none of it critically accepted. That's why I find the Hall soooooo aggravating. Just like the "journalism" this group of elitists has wreaked upon the world - which isn't really journalism at all, it's opinion dressed in journalism's clothing - it comes down to opinion instead of attempting to achieve a real balance. I thought Rick Wakeman stated it perfectly, that if someone a hundred years from now were to use the Hall as a historical reference, it would be a distorted history that is not representative of historical fact. That's really my main beef with the Hall of Fame.

I think they really had 2 big albums with some filler. As far as innovation there is really nothing there - Journey and Styx get in before REO Speedwagon IMO.

Fleetwood Mac is in there, correct? If they are in, I don't really see any reason why Journey couldn't make it. I don't think bands like Styx or REO have a chance in hell; just the way it is. Personally, I think Styx deserves it more, but Styx will never even be given a passing thought by those judges.

Meat Loaf..hmm.. You know, that original "Bat Out Of Hell Album" was really something.. something like a wild costume party on Jupiter.. but interesting. I don't know, I kinda think the man deserves a place in the HOF. I mean, who else was doing 10-15 minute versions of songs, and those heart wrenching vocals..

Journey should easily be in the Hall Of Fame. That is a TOTAL no brainer.

Styx, Foreigner & REO( in that order) should also get in.

I am not sold on Rush at all.

Not a big Kiss fan but they should also get in.
