7 songs? That is it?

Also, yet another product which pretends the band didn't release anything of substance post 1978. 1000 copies sold to the die hards...

Next!

JY: “It would have been good if it had been completed before we got out on the road, but we didn’t quite get there for a variety of reasons..."

WHY would this have been good??? So the fans could hear the same songs over again?? WHAT ARE THESE GUYS THINKING? At least with Cyclo, though it didn't sell hugely, it sold more than this ever will. Once a band stops creating new stuff, you might as well retire. This is way disappointing to me as a Styx fan.

[EDIT]

Sorry to whine, just bums me out that guys this talented are doing nothing new.
I agree with Toph on this one.

This crap makes me want to forget about the band. :x :x :x I agree with Brywool 100%.

Record them if you want...just don't promote them to me...a Styx fan since 1975.

Don't bother even giving me the new recordings for free. I won't play them. Period.

I think Brusco's behind this one..he never met a dollar he didn't love.

Journey, Kiss, Foreigner ... they've all done it. I'm not sure why people have a lot of emotion on this one. It is what it is, and it gives Styx flexibility with some of these tunes now to put them out there for other purposes (although what commerical really wants "Sing for the Day"? lol).

What? No "Blue Collar Man"??? What is WRONG with these guys? Leaving off a hidden gem that hardly ever gets played anymore???? That seals it. I'M not buyin'.

Allan-My beef is that with Journey, they had a new singer and a new record deal. They had something to prove, but more importantly, it was also a stipulation of their new record deal. "Journey, you can record your new album with your new guy, but not unless you re-record your greatest hits for us". I look at it as they had no choice. Journey also didn't have a buttload of live albums already out there with Arnel (or Augeri) and so people hadn't heard many many different versions of the same tracks.

With Styx- They've released all of those songs as live recordings, some of them, many times. Also, Gowan's been in the band for years now. The band has toured extensively. They have nothing left to prove that Gowan's the guy (unless you count Froy and Toph ;) ). The fans were patient while they got him broken in and then they did a great album (yeah, whatever Froy!) like Cyclorama. It looked like, once again, Styx was going to move forward instead of more live albums coming down the pike. As much as I like live albums, I was letdown that every new Styx release was a live album of re-recorded hits. Cyclo was a step to making the band relevant TODAY. They totally moved in the right direction with that.

Now, we're right back to all of that without the live end of it. We've had them doing live re-records of the same old stuff. Then, we had them doing re-records of other people's tracks. Now, we've got them doing re-records of their classic hits. Enough already. Apparently, Styx is out of ideas.

This bums me out as I think Shaw is one helluva writer, player, singer. I just cannot BELIEVE that with Gowan and Shaw that this band has to keep taking backwards steps. Move ahead for God's sake, or retire Styx. I want NEW music from Shaw to keep me interested. I've got all his stuff (styx, solo, dy, s/b) and the guy is one of my favorite songwriters. I have no desire to hear the same songs again in another format. The re-record of Blue Collar Man was awful. It was like Bon Jovi's "This Left Feels Right" which felt more like my colon after too much Mexican food. TERRIBLE record.

I'm not a Kiss fan and Foreigner was kind of in the same boat as Journey with "We have a new singer, we have to let the fans know that he's up to doing the old stuff". Styx has already proven this by touring nonstop for YEARS since Gowan's been in the band.

The other reason it's a drag (sorry to ramble and whine) is because if the band was just going to re-record old crap, then WHY put the fanbase through the whole firing of Dennis? You'd THINK they'd fire Dennis to move on creatively and not just to go out and play the same old stuff from 1977. It kind of makes that whole thing pointless if they're not doing anything new. With Cyclo, I thought "Wow, wise decision to move ahead without Dennis". But if that's all they're going to do, then the move shouldn't have been made. No offense to Gowan, who I like a lot.

I guess this also answers the question of "Can Styx rerecord Dennis' songs??????"

Yeah, it's volume 1... what's your point? The next version will have "Blue Collar Man", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Plexiglass Toilet" and "First Time". How does that make us stupid?

This will be the first Studio Album that Styx ever recorded that I will not buy. I have no interest in someone else recording Dennis' songs.
Ill buy a new album with Gowen writing his own songs like on Cyclo, but I have no interest in him recording Dennis' songs. NONE.
That is just plain wrong.

Not so much wrong as

COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY

I'm not even a "NO Dennis, NO Styx" fan. I LIKE the new band. But who wants to buy more of what they already own?????? If this is a move for the diehard fan, got news for ya. They already have these songs in their original form.

If this is coming from their management as something they need to do, then they need to look into new management.

Dennis is credited with songwriting on some of those tunes. So while Styx may have recorded them, all writing royalties go to Dennis, not Styx. Styx re-recording them is no different than if I went in the studio and recorded, say, CSA and paid the right royalties on it. Dennis still profits.

I know they are Styx's songs and not Dennis'. I don't care. I just said I won't buy it, that's all. I don't dislike Gowen. But I don't want to buy an album of him singing someone else's songs. Just not appealing to me.

I did NOT buy Perry's remastered stuff. Nor the Journey stuff. Everything there, I already had. Except for the new tracks on the Perry album. You couldn't download the bonus stuff from Itunes either, which was super lame of the record company. I've already got "Oh Sherrie" on the original album and on the Greatest Hits +5. Why would I buy it yet again? They really missed the boat by not letting fans by the bonus tracks.
I DID buy a few Beatles remasters, but they're the friggin' Beatles!

oh and thanks for the Av comment on said Beatles.

Whether they did or not, in the eyes of the law and how things like royalties work, they didn't. Get a clue about the business side of the music industry.

Call me crazy, but I'm going to let this actually come out before I try to judge it, LOL. I can see both sides of this one since just about every band I interview nowadays is in the same boat. There's just no outlet for new music from a "classic" band. Radio doesn't play it, companies don't want to sign it, and the brutal truth is that MOST fans don't want to hear it anyway. We here are the few, not the many. The bread and butter Styx fan is the casual fan that goes to a concert and may not even know who is or is not in the band, and a release like this - with the titles of recognizable hits on the sleeve - can do well at the merchandise table, without some company taking a giant bite out of the band's ass. It makes absolute sense on that level.

Now, that said, KISS, Journey and Foreigner all did a great job on their re-records, and when I'm in the mood to listen to those old songs, I still pull out the versions I've been listening to for the last thirty years. I'd imagine this will be the same. Those old records are imprinted in my DNA and it's hard to get past that. Still, I'd much rather see the band doing this than doing nothing at all, and in practical terms this is a good companion piece to the fall tour, since it's heavy on songs from TGI and Po8. It'll be a great point-of-purchase souvenir of those shows for a lot of fans, I think.

I know we'd all rather have a new album, and I bet the band members would rather make a new record, too. But they've obviously accepted that this is the way things are right now for bands of that era, and perhaps we should, too.

SOME of them, yes, because they bargained among themselves. There are also some instances where Dennis wrote chunks of things credited to Tommy or JY and was not credited, either, and other permutations. In fact JY wrote part of "Fooling Yourself", the main keyboard theme, without credit. Dennis had the chorus idea - the chords - for "Miss America", while Tommy wrote the part he sang on "Snowblind" but got no credit. Such is the way of things. They credited poeple who contributed main parts, for the most part, but not even consistently then. I'd say JY's contribution to "Fooling Yourself" deserves credit, and I'd say that Tommy's contribution to "Snowblind" does, too, but that's not the bargain they arrived at. That was by mututal agreement.

Recording has become ridiculously inexpensive these days. Tommy has his own studio. I don't know why these guys won't write and record a new album and sell it on the road...or include it with the ticket price. With no record company involved, they would be able to pocket most of the income. Sure, they won't sell a million copies....but, who cares...they won't need to.

C'mon guys...I believe you have another great album in you!
