August Zadra

This guy is the real deal, he can sing and play! Talk about completely changing Dennis' band I could not believe my ears last night. The thing that really stood out last night is the singing and background vocals by far the best I have heard in a long time at a live concert. It is refreshing to see to hear great background vocals and nothing prerecorded at all. These guys were spot on last night. I did a search on August and found this little article that describes August's audition for Dennis.

August Zadra (Guitar ’89) is touring across the US and Canada as guitarist and singer with Dennis DeYoung, a founding member of STYX. The audition came about after DeYoung’s son discovered Zadra performing on YouTube with a STYX tribute band.

Describing the audition itself, August added some relevant advice for aspiring pro guitar players. “One big point that I would like to make is that the only reason I got this gig is because I can sing. I think this addresses a critical point for the guitar community – we all need to be the best overall musicians we can be, rather than “just” the best guitarist/instrumentalist we can be. I never considered myself a guitar-playing singer- rather, I was always a guitarist who also sang. The day I met Dennis, he must have said a half-dozen times that this gig is ‘all about the vocals.’”

Just from the photos and a few videos I have seen, he reminds me a bit of Robin Zander from Cheap Trick. Not a bad thing at all!

Journey's not in my vocal range unfortunately. Styx is though. I wouldn't attempt the Journey one.

First off, please keep the Journey discussion off the Styx forums. There are enough forums dedicated to all that. :)

With that being said, GREAT call on a young Robin Zander. Heck yes this guy can sing. When we got there about 4:45, and soundcheck was in progress, I knew he'd nail everything. He and the other guys were then walking around the carnival and getting some food. I am mad I didn't go up to him and say hello. Do any of you know how many live shows he's done with DDY so far?

Wooden Nickel stuff would be fun, but I don't think anyone would get it. Lady's the only one, right now. I think "Borrowed Time" is what it'll be called at this point. Also just getting a Paul McCartney tribute off the ground. http://www.wingsnthings.net

nah. His voice got more deep, more rounded, but still pretty cool. While working out the bass parts to Lady the other day, I click on Youtube links with the original single and then his later, Greatest Hits performance. WOW, whatta difference in approach. I have to say I like the original styling that he used. He's made fun of his early vocal performances in interviews and stuff. I, like you, prefer the older sound he had, but he's still a great singer.

While I have reservations about DDY adding the TS songs to his set list, I have to say that August did a really good job with them. The recent line up changes to DDY's band has made a very positive impact to his shows.

August Zadra is a fantastic addition to Dennis's band. He was very entertaining to watch and he's extremely talented. I'd like to hear him on a new Dennis album-- If Dennis stays in the writing mode he was in for One Hundred Years From Now and has August sing 3-4 songs, it'll be more Styx than Styx.

You Bet all 4 guys have added a nice impact to the show, It felt like a STYX concert to me with the setlist being all Styx but it's time to kick it up a notch and get to better venues and stages, The harmonies are terrific and Shaw songs fit great, He should have been doing these songs from the beginning.

The 2 acoustic shows were unbelievable.

If Dennis isn't able to put an album of new tunes out, he should re-record those songs acousticly.

I said it before, Dennis needs a way to get this lineup recorded and out to the public.

If Dennis can get 3 or 4 songs done and combine them with the acoustic stuff, that would take the pressure off of writing an entire album and bridge the gap untilhe does.

I said it before, Dennis needs a way to get this lineup recorded and out to the public.

If Dennis can get 3 or 4 songs done and combine them with the acoustic stuff, that would take the pressure off of writing an entire album and bridge the gap untilhe does.

I would love this, myself. A nice acoustic album. Jimmy is a terrific acoustic player and I would think that would be a most enjoyable album of music with these new players involved, IMO.

I will add, that if Dennis does have the opportunity to put out another album, it sure would be nice for it to get a bit of promotion. I have always felt 100 Years was allowed to die on the vine in Canada after producing that No. 1 single in Quebec. And it never even got any sort of promotion in the US. He got a few decent interviews and positive reviews and a couple of TV appearances and then, nada.

If Dennis isn't able to put an album of new tunes out, he should re-record those songs acousticly.

The only way for classic rock artists to get label promotion is if they do it themselves, unfortunately.

Other than the top industry artists, they don't promote these artists any more. Walrus for Styx was a fluke, as were the singles released by Shaw Blades. Of course, other than during the intial release, radio stations will always promote the original version over a remake. So many artists are shooting themselves in the foot. Even Tom Petty is giving his new music away for free. So that should say alot.
