Larry on Guitar on Suite Madame Blue

Postby Abitaman » Fri Jul 23, 2010 11:16 am

Found this today, if it has already been posted, sorry. But when JY was out for a few shows due to his wife being ill, seems that Larry filled in on some of the guitar work.
Listed below is from one of those shows. Vocally it is not DDY, but it rocks, and I bought blew my coke out my noise, when he strapped on the axe and started strutting around the stage. I had to watch it twice, I was laughing so hard. The man was strutting all over his part of the stage.
I am not puting Larry down by saying that. By all means it is apraise, that the man is that talented and is not afraid to step out of his comfort zone and do something different. I had seen him play guitar on Heavy Water, as a third quitarist. But this was stepping up to help out.

Larry has been known to be on the guitar from time to time. Seeing him on guitar during midnight ride three years ago was AMAZING.

It cracks me up a little bit on how much folks on this board keep telling us how amazing this guy is. It's almost like you would give the guy a standing ovation if he picked his nose while standing center stage. :D

Actually your wrong. While I respect DDY as an artist and performer, I do not think the man is perfect in every way or think he is the most amazing performer. In fact, I don't agree with everything he did in regards to Styx. I just don't see him as the "root of all evil" in Styx as some seem to think he was. The truth is there is plenty of blame to go all around with what happened in Styx.

Same can be said for me my friend, I respect all of them for who they are, DDY,TS, JY,LG, Todd, Ricky. I did not start this thread as a praise for larry, as stated he looked goofy, but I give him credit. Larry is doing a job he likes, and the band wants him there. I am a bigger DDY fan than Larry, but I do not let that me from listening to Styx, or any of their solo stuff.
Most people here do not get that, they think you belong in either one or the other camp. That is bull, I liked Styx long before I knew each member, or what their part in the band was. I am a Styx fan, and a fan of each member past or present. I own cds by ALL members past and present. DDY is my favorite artist in the group followed by Shaw.

He does look pretty funny in GuitarManStance.
His voice has a lot more treble than DeYoung's, which is a drag, but is actually closer to DDY's earlier stuff. Oh well. He's not Dennis. Doesn't try to be. Shouldn't be. Big Deal.
The thing that's weird in this is Young's missing harmony in the first chorus. Many people don't give JY credit, but his voice has a lot to do with Styx's harmony sound. So much so that on 100 Years From Now, there's a guy there that sounds suspiciously like JY.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Only thing I know of Chalfant was The Storm, which was decent. It would be interesting to know how that would've turned out when he was in Journey. I guess that when he was in, all the sudden Perry wanted back in and we got Trial By Fire. Having said that, I'm a Pineda fan for sure. I think the guy's great and has an enviable set of pipes. Little bastard!! ;)
I didn't know that was him on Dennis' album doing those high parts. First time I heard it, I did a double take because it sounded SO much like JYs harmonies.

Funny thing I sent Tim a video of Kevin with Shooting Star doing a George Harrison tribute and he sent it to DDY and Kevin got the gig because of it.

I agree that JY's harmonies are a big part of the trademark Styx sound. I also felt the same way about some of the backing harmonies on OYFN.
