Todd Sucherman on Long Live Rock this Sunday 7 PM Central

PostPosted: Thu Aug 12, 2010 3:23 am
by Rockwriter
Last night we taped an interview with Todd that we'll air this Sunday. Here is the link http://www.blogtalkradio.com/longlivero ... -sucherman

You can set a reminder at that link if you want to. The show will also be archived for streaming and download after it airs. This is (obviously) a pre-taped show, not live. We talked quite a bit about 'Regeneration,' the upcoming fall tour, the state of the music business, and much more.

Thanks! I hope all is well.

Sterling

Actually, I don't know of him, and have never heard of him until reading his name on these boards.
My last hurrah with Styx was seeing them on their Paradise Theater Tour and owning that same LP with the laser etchings on the disc.

Does the guy have any hit songs or something you can point me to so I can check him out?

So for Styx, he is the Canadian equivalent of Augeri or Pineda for Journey.
I see.

He seems to be popular in Canada. Does he have his own troupe of Canuck fans, like Arnel's Plokkers who follow his every movement from show to show?

His career in Canada seems to have hit the wall ten years ago. Is that when he came on board with Styx?

Yes that was when he came aboard, but his career didn't hit the wall in Canada. He still does big business up there apparently. He came aboard for Styx because they asked him. The guy actually plays circles around DeYoung though is not the vocalist that DeYoung is. He's also not the writer Dennis was, but neither is Dennis. Gowan's a decent writer though. Had Dennis not steered the band into projects like Kilroy Was Here (you know Don, that album that you didn't buy? Gee, wonder why that was?) then we wouldn't be having this conversation and you would only get to see Styx live once every five years and they would be playing slow songs with the word Paradise in them all night long.
Now, you can pretty much see them every week somewhere and while the DeYoung songs are passable, no, they do not sound like Dennis. However, there's enough of it there to satisfy most concert goers as their tours have proven.
I would encourage you to check out Cyclorama. It's a brilliant record and Gowan is featured on some tracks.
I also encourage you to check out Dennis' 100 Years From Now. Decent record with mostly brilliant tunes and also some great cruise ship songs.

It'd be nice if Dennis was still there, but it'll never happen. But, like Journey, guys that don't or won't work get replaced.

The last time he charted there was in 1997, so something obviously changed.

My sister was a Styx nut but I found them to be just alright, not great but good enough. Sort of like Kansas and all those other mid west bands that seemed to flourish in the late 70's, early 80's.

Last time he charted was as a solo artist. He basically gave up his solo career in 1997 to join Styx shortly thereafter. Can't really chart if you're not putting out records.

They would have imploded even if KWH never happened. Funny how you call the DDY songs they still play "passable". So the much improved version of Styx picks passable songs for their set list? Interesting. All you get from Styx live now is the same old songs over and over. But they are releasing a new album. Oh wait, not really it's a bunch of songs from their old catalog that it seems they felt the need to improve upon or something with one new lack luster song tacked on the end. Cyclorama "brilliant", I would love to see what you consider a masterpiece.

He can't really chart even when he is. He did a few originals with Styx that went nowhere even with this supposed Huge Canadian following.
Then Dennis goes up there and scores a number one, Shows who is more popular in Canada
