Van Halen used them.
Rush used them.
I can't stand em, but some like em.

Oh come on. Dennis has fun with this song. He always has a campy, humorous take on it and tries to milk some fun for the audience out of it.

It was a very big hit. Many fans love it. Kids especially.

Would I rather it be retired and something like Castle Walls put in its place, well, yeah, but that is never going to happen.

I have always looked upon it as a goof off song in his set and I think he does as well. He is very aware a lot of people get a big kick out of it.

For those who have not seen Dennis, it goes over very well. I think people forget that your average Joe/Jane likes to hear songs they are familiar with. Dennis has accepted this. Styx has as well, but they still ignore part of their hits for one reason or another (not dredging up that debate - not my goal here). It really does need repeating - those of us on this board represent such a small percentage of the people who go out and see Dennis and Styx. For the most part they don't cater to us. Maybe a track here or there (as DDY has done over the years), or the limited run of shows Styx is doing with GI/Po8 - that's about it. Outside of that, it's anywhere from 60 - 120 minutes of hits (depending on venue and if they're no a multi-bill slot) to keep asses in seats.

A good "we'll never do that again" moment was the Journey Generations tour where they did that whole first set of moldy oldies from the first few years. I loved it, but that crowd was RESTLESS until they hit around 1978 material. It's unfortunate, but that's the way these things go.

For me, not really. I have said before that I really don't care for this song in a live setting. However, I completely understand why Dennis is playing it. I do wish that he would rotate it in and out of his set. I will also say that he does seem to get a little too campy with at times, which I feel detracts from the overall performance of the song. I compare it to how bored I got with Miss America live and JY's posing while performing it.

I know that they stuffed Fitz (from Night Ranger) to the side or under the stage when he toured with Van Halen. He played keyboards for them, Eddie wasn't playing them.

They wrote with them, and Neil used electronic drums. Geddy did use a sequencer (starting with the Oberheim DMX I believe, which is technically a drum machine; I think for later stuff he just used the built-in arpeggiators and sequencers of the Rolands), and by Grace Under Pressure with songs like "Red Sector A", Neil was wearing headphones live so everything was beat precise. It got worse with Power Windows and on because they had to sync to video elements as well, so while they technically never used a drum machine, they arguably were slaves in the same way for certain songs.

My Feelings Exactly, and I agree with the Miss America comments as well. That same ... 'over selling' also came from JY in Snowblind.

I've been to 25+ DDY solo concerts and when he started playing "Mr. Roboto" the crowd would go crazy, in a good way. My kids and the "newbies" I bring to the concert really enjoy seeing/hearing "Mr. Roboto" live. They have fun watching DDY and his band having a good time on the stage.

Watching a YouTube video and being there live is like night and day, same goes for EVERY concert. To each his/her own.

Agreed. That's also part of my feeling as well and also part of why I asked the question. Dennis is above this-- isn't he??? There were those that beat up on Styx quite a bit for doing the "fair circuit" and just had a field day with them. In this clip, Dennis looks like he's playing at a WalMart or Winnebago convention. Nice building behind him, but look at the front row of the audience. Not his fault for sure, but man, it's tough to see bands that you like in these situations.

Actually quite easy - I picked up a lot of the Rush stuff around 87/88. Got into them in the MTV era, so GUP, PoW, and HYF are my favorites. Most parts sound much harder than they are. Some are genuinely tricky ("Turn the Page"), and then remembering the live vs. studio variations ...

I'm actually in the midst of recoring my new jazz album (1st one that's all me; I've done a few in the past with a co-writer/arranger). I arranged a few rock tunes, one of which is "Cygnus X-1".
