If you could ask each member of past or current Styx (DDY, Tommy, JY, Chuck, Lawerence, Glen, Todd, Ricky) one question about the band, their career, their choices, etc... what would that question be??

Yeah... I'm being slightly sarcastic with my questions (except to Glen and Todd)... just feeling a little acerbic today.

Dennis: If you could turn back time with Styx, is there anything you would've done differently personality-wise?

Tommy: Not too long ago, you were everywhere creating new music (Shaw/Blades, Damn Yankees, Your Solo Projects, Cyclorama). For the past few years, your writing seems to have pretty much stopped. Are you saving songs for a rainy day or are you going through writer's block?

Jy: Was there really no other way around the firing of Dennis? More importantly, can you show me the break lick for Renegade?

Chuck: In the early days, your bass playing could be pretty adventurous. Right about the time of the A&M albums, you seemed to reign yourself in. Was that more a direction from the songwriter, or just your own way to change things up? More importantly, how are you feeling these days?

Good Q, Bry - I may go past one question - on some, but it stays within the theme.

Dennis - What was your original vision for Kilroy? You know, the one that you teased in the opening liner notes of Greatest Hits. Why did you bow to pressure and dumb it down? Why didn't you take your manager's advice and wait on KWH and combine it with a movie?

I like ricky but i'm really not all the familiar with him. But if i were to ask him one question it would probably be where he buy's his hat's

He plays the verses and the solo to BCM wrong. Recorded it's basically dotted quarter/eighth notes to give it a bit of bounce. It goes to solid quarter notes in the chorus (for the most part). Every time I've seen Styx live with him, it's been basically solid quarters all the way through. He changes the entire feel of the tune.

What's to learn with Styx bass parts? I can do 'em in my sleep

Well, to sing and play bass is more the trick. To try to sing Madame Blue while playing that bass line took a bit of figuring.
Same with Lady and GI. I'm new at the bass and have been a rhythm player forever. So it's just new to me. It's way fun too. I did read your post the other day about BCM and listened to it. Yeah, he does do that, doesn't he?

Gotcha. I started on bass in 1980, so I've got quite a few years under my belt. It's my main instrument.

It drives me batshit whenever I hear that song live with Styx now. To me it takes the swagger out of that song.

honestly all i really want to know is I would love to see the tax returns for dennis, tommy and jy from 1976 through 2010.

i have always been massively curious about what kind of money these kinds of band actually pulled in throughout their careers.

Glenn: Your contributions to Styx, in my opinion, far exceed that of Gowan (re: EOTC, Cyclorama). You played the guitars/base well, you have a good (normal) stage presence, and you sound GREAT vocally (much more pleasing to the ears than Gowan). Does this all have anything to do with why you left the band?

Ricky (IMO) WAY overplays.

Bass parts in Styx songs are SIMPLE. They were written that way. Dennis produced them that way, because if the bass was "busy", in most Styx songs, it would just get in the way of the other instruments and vocals.

Glen, for the most part, played all the parts VERY loyally to Chuck's original lines. I had MANY discussions with GB about this very thing - in typical self-depricating fashion he would usually tell me it's because he's not a very good bassist, but would later admit that he had a sort of 'reverance' for Chuck's parts, and as a "hired gun", his job was to play them as written.

Todd also embellishes John's original parts, but in his case, it's usually very subtle, and extremely tastefully done, always keeping the intended feel of the song.

Ricky alters nearly every bass phrase in every single song - to the point to where it's very distracting (to my ears at least).

That being said, I have HUGE respect for Ricky and his work with the Babys, Bad English, Coverdale/Page, and Fredrickson/Phillips. When doing ORIGINAL music, I think he's the bomb. Doing serious re-interpretation of other people's music (Coverdale/Page), also quite impressive. Covering other people's music faithfully, not so much.
