from nick, why not,

they have put out live releases in the past and this is something different, especially with songs that have not appeared live on anything else

They are most likely correct. They'd have to get DDY's permission to release video that included his songs - it's different than just releasing CD.

So thankfully the world will be saved from yet another "live" recording from Styx...

Unless of course they would put out one that looked like this.

Foolin Yourself
Miss America
Man In The Wilderness
Great White Hope
Sing For The Day
Blue Collar Man
Renegade
Aku Aku

Not exactly a concert's worht of footage....

You really aren't very bright, are you? If DDY is sold writer or cowriter on any song then that song will not be on a DVD.

Dennis only songs will not be on the dvd. That's why grand illusion/come sail away weren't on the cyo dvd. Co written songs will be included. Check and mate!

How many Dennis co written songs are on 21st century live?
That would be ZERO.
DVD Tracks
Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)
Everything Is Cool
Brave New World
Kiss Your Ass Goodbye
A Criminal Mind
Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)
Heavy Water
Too Much Time On My Hands
These Are The Times

As I said earlier, there are different rules for licensing audio (plain ol' mechanical license) and then taking audio and doing something like sync'ing up video.

This question was asked of Todd in his interview with Sterling and he flat out said he couldn't see it happening because it was unlikely Dennis would give them permission to release his songs.

That's right. It has to do, as Styxcollector was saying, with bringing a song into a new format like DVD. Many of the songs on these records were written by Dennis and have not appeared on DVD. That requires a sync license, which has to be granted by the author. Dennis of course has no reason to grant any such license. So this coming to DVD ain't happening. You wanna see this, you'd better go see it live.

from nick,

still wish we could get some kind of live release out of this, a double live cd would be cool, didn't get a chance to see the show and the you tube clips seem pretty good, just to have live official releases of great white hope and man in the wilderness would be great, maybe they can put out a live ep or something after the tour

To piggyback on the video copyright issue, when a song is co-written, ALL writers must give permision for it to be used for video reproduction or commercial licensing regardless if it's a different singer/performer or not, if I remember correctly. There was great apprehension in Journey's camp during the Wal-mart Deal that Perry woud kill the video portion of the package by blocking all the songs he had co-written. He didn't do it and that actually makes a lot of sense as if he ever wanted to release his own DVD with him singing collaborated Journey songs, the band could pull the same action back on him.

As far as audio retreads, as long as you don't alter the melody or change the lyrics (no tampering with the orignal artist's work without his approval), anyone can pretty much cover any song they want as long as the pay royalties. and file the proper paperwork.

"Former Member" just cracks me up. Like it's going to someone other then Dennis. Thank God Dennis would not allow them to put this crap on video. It's bad enough as an audio recording.

What about money? Wouldn't that be a reason?

It seems that JY must have granted "such license" for Denny to use Lorelei on his symphoney DVD.

Interesting point. Of course when it comes to this group of people, expect the unexpected, LOL.

As a co-author of a song, I do not believe you need a license from the other co-author. Hence Lorelei appearing on Dennis' DVD and also on CYO.

The relevant bits:
IF I CO-WRITE A SONG WITH MY BANDMATES AND LATER QUIT, CAN I
STOP THE BAND FROM PERFORMING OR RECORDING THAT SONG?

Not really. Because each author is considered the co-owner of a joint work, the other co-writers can continue to record and perform the work without your permission (as long as they account to you for your share of any income earned). Of course, you can also record and perform this song without their permission as long as you account to the other writers. These co-authors can also license the song to others on a non-exclusive basis as long as they account to you for any income received, but they cannot enter into any exclusive publishing or administration deal concerning this song without your written permission.
