Been a long time since I posted but saw Dennis tonight

Hi Folks

I kinda lurk here to find out what is new with the band(s) but I don't usually post, because, well, I am not interested in all the yelling. I used to post on an old board and recognize some names. Hope everyone is well.

Saw Dennis in Halifax tonight. Thought I would share the experience.

The band had had I think 8 weeks off, Dennis said, and the show was somewhat loose in places. Dennis actually came in in the wrong spot in Loreli, and you could see the other keys player and drummer have "a moment". It was a pretty slick recovery. However, it was so honest and wonderful that I am OK with the odd mistake. Great sound, great stage energy and nice to hear the early 80's Styx set live (plus a few)

New stuff: a guitar version of don't let it end, with some just fantastic harmony. Worth the cost of admission right there.

Suzanne sang Tommy's harmony part in Grand Illusion. That was interesting.

To me August sounded pretty much exactly like Tommy live. It was very cool.

Suite Madam Blue was one of the best versions I have ever heard. Wow!

The harmony in Renegade really benifited from all the singers on stage. Great version, just awesome.

Low points:
Vocoder(?) crapped out halfway through roboto, and didn't work at all in Best of times. Sad. Roboto was, well, I thought just excellent though. Great singing in this band.

Some of Dennis' keybopard improvising was a little on the not in the pocket side. Strange, but true. At least to me.

All in all I am so glad I saw this show. The crowd was really into it and the band was having fun. Come Sail Away was amazing. Great live performance

Not as slick as Styx seems on the youtube videos from the last tour, but better overall singing I think. I am personally glad I didn't see JY do Great White Hope, based on all the videos. Still wish I had seen them live together, but I am so glad that they are all still making music!

Cheers, from Canada

Nate

Sounds like a fun show! Thanks for the review, it's a shame how many people don't post or join in due to the bad attitudes of a few regulars. :(

Hey Mr v. I remember your posts from years ago, I think. Yeah, I just like the music, and am glad someone is still making it, to be sure.

Another thing I noticed about last night's show was a weird moment. Dennis started "Show Me the Way, and then stopped, as if the rest of the band had not come in, which they clearly had. He then asked them if they had played. It was odd to see him so, well, out of sorts. Then they kicked the pants off of the tune, probably with more monitor in Dennis' ear bud.

mr friendly, right on cue. it's a shame you can't "ignore" certain screen names on here like on the old AOL board. then maybe this place would become enjoyable, and more people might actually post here. hey Nate- i remember you too! thanks for the review. :D

Nate. So very glad you enjoyed the show! Thanks for the review. I think it is just amazing how Dennis has retained his vocal quality and it is really something to behold live.

One thing that is evident is that DDY has loosened up a lot since the new band has been in place. He also seems to be enjoying himself much more, too. Good counter-example: at the infamous Lost Treasures show at the HOB, he was having monitor problems and was clearly annoyed. I haven't seen Dennis like that at a show in a long time. His shows - despite something happening like what was posted here - are very tight overall.

Hi There all

Just to be clear, I thought the show was amazing. Dennis looked like he was really loose. It was so much fun and so musical. Odd things happen in shows, for sure, but the band sounds great. Now, if Styx would come to Halifax, I would be happy. I am going to have to go up to Niagra to see them some time, or down to Boston.

Dennis really needs to come back to Nashville, we get a STYX fix about once a year around here but the last time Dennis was in town was, I think, back in 2005 with his symphony show. I would love to see and hear the new band.

He needs to hit the South..period. (VA, TN, NC, SC, GA, AL)

Was the South not a good Styx market, even it their heyday?

Thanks for the review! Dennis is FINALLY coming to California. He will be in Anaheim in February. So I'm going to make the 7 hour drive and take my 8 year old daughter (who loves Dennis as much as I do) to Disneyland and of course to the concert!
It's funny. She has her entire softball team and 2nd grade class listening to Paradise Theatre and 100 years from now!
It really is hysterical when you hear an 8 year old singing the words to "half penny two penny"!!

I SO wanted to to that show in Halifax (my hometown!). I was here in Montreal sulking the entire evening of the show. I'm not kidding! Ask my boyfriend who suffered my presence all evening. :-(

I'm glad the show went (relatively) well. Weird things always happen now and then. They definitely had a better venue this time than the last time he was in Halifax in 2006 (I was at that show). Whoever was handling the sound equipment that night in 2006 did such a bad job that I was afraid he'd never come to Halifax again.

It's quite a different show with the new band members - I love watching the jaws drop when August starts to sing! LOL!

Say hi to Halifax for me,

Amanda

Are any of you going to be at Dennis' Anaheim show on February 19th? Or am I the only one here that lives in California?

I'm looking forward to it. I haven't seen him since 2006 in Morristown, Jersey with Glen.

Hey Amanda

I was born in Montreal and live here. I was at the 2006 show as well, at the Rebecca Cohn. He had monitor problems, if I remember. Hopefully he comes back here again!

Awwww, you're so sweet! I missed you guys too. Lots of changes in my life (more to come) so I faded into the background a bit. I promise to check in more often!

Hey Nate,

I was born in Yarmouth but lived in Halifax for 18 years and now live in Montreal. Want to move back to Halifax but can't just yet. Yes they all had MAJOR monitor problems that night in 2006. I hate to say this but it was the worst of the 16 or so DDY shows I've seen. I was sitting in the front row and could clearly see the frustration on the musician's faces. I felt so bad for them especially since I think the monitoring equipment was rented. This is not how you treat visiting bands!

Anyway, glad they came to the Casino. Maybe he'll come back but I would think that at this stage in DDY's life, I wouldn't be surprised if he begins to ease back on the touring dates.

Amanda

I double dog dare you to meet me in New Jersey in March. I'll be sitting in the second row in the balcony. :-P

I'll be at the Tarrytown show. Much easier than Chicago for me to see the unplugged show :)

We were thinking of stopping in Tarrytown on our way back to Montreal but my boyfriend has to be back on Monday so we stuck with the Saturday night show only. I prefer the full rock show to the unplugged version in any case. Now that there's a show listed for Montreal this spring I'm getting two DDY shows anyway. :-)

That's a crazy couple of days for me. I'm flying back from Seattle on the 3rd (back like 1AM on the 4th), have a concert to play in on Friday, a wedding Saturday, and then driving down for DDY on Sunday.
