So lemme get this straight...
Tommy's recording a new album, sans-Styx - even though "internet piracy kept Cyclo from selling big numbers".
Todd's doing a new drum DVD even though internet piracy ruined his first experience.
Okay, this all makes perfect sense... wait...
I don't get it.
I guess Styx is just no longer a band that wants to create new music... all that talent in that band and they will now spend their remaining years re-recording their old songs? This is just sad news. I cannot believe that there's not a DECENT record company out there that will pick up Dennis and Styx and pay them to create new music.
I was watching a documentary on Taylor Swift (yeah, yeah...)- her 1st record was released by a startup company. She's STILL with that label which is now probably rolling in dough. You telling me that a band like Styx or Dennis couldn't get picked up by someone like that and get marketed properly? Better yet, start their own label? It's a different world out there and those that succeed are doing things differently. Everyone's got studios in their homes now. I just cannot believe that these 6 talented individuals choose to not create new things. Sorry, just boggles my mind folks.
Along the same lines-
I saw someone post on Youtube the other day "you know, since internet piracy has ruined the music biz, why don't they just go back to vinyl? Sounds better anyway."
I'd never thought that before. Maybe that's what needs to happen. It won't stop mp3 downloading, but it is more difficult to drop a piece of vinyl into your PC... You know that if MTV, etc. made vinyl "look" like the "in" thing, that companies and listeners would flock to it.

I think that it's fairly obvious that Styx as a unit is no longer interested in creating a substantial amount of new music, i.e. a full album. They are going where the money is, touring. You need to get used to this reality.

they could still go out and play their tours and play the greatest hits to pay the bills and record new music and make a limited run of the cd's available for purchase thru their website or better yet make a digital download available and you have no duplication or distribution costs.
that would keep the creative juices and satisfaction of creating new music still a part of what they do just to a much smaller audience than the glory days.
this business plan would appeal to all current styx fans willing to buy the new music and the package tour fans that want to hear the same set year after year.

Now, I would prefer them do it properly in a real studio with external engineers because Regeneration sonically sounds like crap for the most part. I talk about it in my review, which I'm going to post this weekend.

I go into a studio (I prefer it, but I do have a home demo studio). But these guys do have nearly full proper studios at home. And if you look at the credits for Regeneration, it was pretty much recorded individually in their own studios.

No on sings about a papercut like masque does.
And if you think Gowan has got the chops.....................................
On his third project the way he fades the xylophone in and out you would think Mutt Lange had produced this baby.
I felt that his third project 'Ashtrays For Babies' was by far his best. The tracks include:
1.Batman ( cover version TV show)
2. Your Dog, My Flies ( orginal)
3. Jack Fell Down (orginal)
4. Jill Dumps Jack (orginal)
5. Rice a ronia For Breakfast ( orginal)
6. Toys For American Boys ( cover version)
7. This Is Not A Test ( cover )
8.My Bike is Red (orginal)
9. Ashtrays For Babies (orginal title track)
10.Plexiglass toilet(cover)
* on his linear notes masque states that no group or solo artist has ever put the title track 9TH on a 10 song disc.
Also when you purchased any of his four projects he throws in a set of steak knives.
Styx could do the same!!

I loved the concept!! I remember my first job working at Burger King. I would always put ashtrays in the babies high chairs. I thought that was so funny. Then this CD comes along and it brings me back......................
GREAT job!!!!!!!!
masque wrote:you forgot to mention that "ashtrays for babies" had a special hidden track, the them from star trek done entirely with nothing but bass guitars......much like spinal tap's "big bottom" was done....in fact, it was my inspiration for this tune as well.

First of all... it's "7 Deadly Zens".... and it's a solo album.
Brave New World sounded like disjointed puppy shit.
And don't get me started on Cyclorama.
masque wrote:my bad typo on the sins intead of zens......and I know "ash"wipe that it's a freaking solo album. the point is that it was recorded for the most part in tommy's home studio as well as big chunks of the styx albums BNW and Cyclorama.....and to me there is nothing wrong with those albums sonically.

First, BNW and Cyclorama were not only recorded in home studios. Get your facts straight. Second, the mix on BNW sucks in places badly; some of that has to be attributed to bad source material, not just bad mix. Cyclorama is well engineered, though.

Well excuse me FUCKTARD.... I figured you would at least know what the hell you are talking about before you go spewing things you have no clue about.
Spell it right, then call me names. Until then... go fuck yourself.

Do you all realize that it has been 25 years since Tommy Shaw uttered those famous words 'You cant stop the music you bastards'.
How time flies!!!!!!
P.S. rumor has it 'big Chunks'(see above) is how Froy referred to his beloved Chunks when they were spending quality time together.
