It's too bad those stupid shows always made all the bands lip sinc. Styx was soooo much better live than on record. I never understood why American Bandstand and all the copy-cat shows wouldn't allow the bands to play LIVE.

It has to do with budget. Especially with Bandstand, 'cause Dick Clark is legendarily the cheapest bastard ever to work in the music business. It costs an awful lot more to stage and broadcast a live performance. With lip synching you don't have to have sound guys, a mobile truck, or a special crew. You're not even plugged into anything, you just stand there and mime while they play your record, which is essentially free.
Shows like Saturday Night Live, where people actually played live, used to get the labels to jump in with promotional dollars to defray those huge costs.
