Double Life...

Could have been a single off KWH. It has enough poppiness to it that it could have done very well IMO.

One of the best songs on Kilroy never played live other than the JYG band and that was killer.

How well would Kilroy had done if they had been able to stick out that tour...

Mr. Roboto - #3
DLIE - #6
Releaes HWBHB - would have gone top 10 - let's say #7 and would have kept the momentum throughout the summer
Release Double Life - would have gone top 20 - let's say #15 and pushed on through fall and now you have 4 hit singles - might as well go for a fifth...
Release edited version of Just Get Through This Night (sans shami sen intro)- would have gone top 15 - let's say #12....

5 big singles on one album - Journey had 4 with Frontiers, Billy Joel had 6 with Innocent Man, Bruce had 7 with Born In The USA...Genesis had 5 or 6 with Invisible Touch...This would have been Styx's big single album. A missed opportunity....

You must be kidding. Frontiers was 100's of times better and I like Styx far more than Journey.

I like Double Life BUT it would have NEVER cracked the top 40. JY never had a top 40 single. There is a reason for that. Snowblind maybe could have been but that was he & mostly Tommy and they never released it. I LOVE Just Get Through This Night but again NEVER a Top 40.

So that leaves 3- Roboto which at the time I thought sucked. I still do but I dont hate it quite as much. Dont Let It End - HORRIBLE HORRIBLE Styx ballad, and Have'nt We Ben Here Before this song was possibly a top 20 song. I liked it.

That album sucked compared to past Styx albums. It was a train wreck, and their downfall. The tour rocked, but the album blew.

Yogi - your personal tastes do not make singles. Roboto and DLIE you say are horrible, but the American people clearly liked them. Double Life could definitely been a pop single. Listen to it in the context of 1983 and tell me it couldn't have found a home at pop radio. Just Get Through This Night also could have played in 1983. Get rid of the 2 minute introduction and you have a 4 minute pop ballad. It would have worked fantastically.

As for Journey - the entire second side of Frontiers didn't have a single worthy song - it was experimental, but certainly not radio friendly.

And Snowblind, as a pop single? No way! It didn't even crack the top 20 on the rock track chart - no way it makes any headway as a pop single - too dark, too brooding, heck too scary for a pop single.

Disagree 100%X2 - The only JY vocal led single ever released was Snowblind. JY does not have a radio friendly top 40 type of voice. When JY screams 'It's not always honesty,' that is not getting on the radio bro. Snowblind is 100X's better than Double Life. I actually like Double Life. I really do. But it is in no way a radio friendly song. Heavy Metal Poisoning is a far catchier and more radio friendly song than Double Life is.

Frontiers with Faithfully, Seperate Ways, Send Her My Love, After The Fall etc... cant remember the album was far far better now and at the time.

One of the songs I liked off KWH. Not sure if it would have done well as a single. Since DDY and TS were best known by the general public as Styx I doubt they would have considered pushing a song lead by JY.

Never "got" Seeger, just like I never "Got" Skynyrd, or Springsteen. Oh well... or Diamond.
But Double Life? That whole lower vocal thing that JY does is just so bad. Sounds like the Cowardly Lion. It was cool in Snowblind, but in Double Life and other tunes, I just didn't like it. Gimme "1/2 Penny, 2 Penny", "Great White Hope", "Midnight Ride", "Miss American- STUDIO VERSION ONLY!", "Heavy Water", and others. I liked "Heavy Metal" poisoning from Kilroy more. Had a sense of humor and a great guitar solo.

To me, "Double Life" was another "Eddie". SKIP BUTTON.

Of course the truly lost JY single is Sitting On Top of The World, right Yogi.

"brywool""froy"

Never "got"Diamond

ARTIST: Neil Diamond
TITLE: A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You
Lyrics and Chords

Walk out - Girl, don'tcha walk out
We've got things to say
Talk out - Let's have it talked out
And things will be okay

{Refrain}
Girl, I don't wanna fight
I'm a little bit wrong, and you're a little bit right
I said girl, you know that it's true
It's a little bit me, and it's a little bit you, too

Don't know - Just what I said wrong
But girl, I apologize
Don't go - Here's where you belong
So wipe the tears from your eyes

{Refrain twice}

It's a little bit me, it's a little bit you
Girl, I'm gone, no no no no no
Girl, I'm gone, no no no no no
Hey, girl...

Not bad for his 3rd tune . The Monkees became stars because of Neil Diamond the guy is in the Paul category Genius

I have also always felt that "Double Life" could have been a single. That one is J.Y's most commercial song. I think they should have released it instead of "High Time", but I also think that "Haven't We Been Here Before" should have been the second single. Save the sure thing, "Don't Let It End" for last, but then again, they never had more than three singles per album, and a lot of times, only had two.

I will agree that it's tough to know if the public would have gone for a song that wasn't DDY or Tommy at that point, but keep in mind, they did give J.Y. lead songs chances as singles in the early days: "Best Thing", "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It", "You Need Love", and "Young Man" were all singles. It wasn't until they struck it big with "Lady", and moved over to A&M, that they stopped releasing J.Y. lead songs. Maybe "Doble Life" would have been the right song to get him back out there. "Snowblind" is hard to say. It's a kick ass song, but I'm not sure that it was pop enough for the time.

There is not a single scenario where Double Life would have worked as a single. I agree they should have went with Tommy's ballad following Don't Let it End and it would have given the album more legs, but Double Life would have killed any momentum to the album by the previous single much the same as High Time did to DLIE. Bad decisions by A&M plagued Styx at one time or another before. For one, going with Nothing Ever Goes as Planned instead of Rockin' The Paradise first. Another time would have been to follow Babe with maybe Lights or even Never Say Never instead of Why Me which halted album sales for Corberstone and kinda killed any chance of Borrowed Time of being a hit. Bad decision, but that's why hindsight is 20/20.

Actually, you're right. I DID like his stuff for the Monkees. He's nowhere near the Paul category. As a vocalist, I just don't get him. His range is so limited that I don't get it. Sounds like Reeger from Taxi. Now, as a songwriter, you may have something there Froy. I just don't like his performance. He's like Dylan, Springsteen and some others- great songwriters, but vocalists that I can't stand. The Monkees became stars because of Don Kirshner, Television, and the Beatles not Diamond. Though "I'm a Believer" was a huge hit.

I like this version though!

Speaking of the Monkees, there was some real talent in that band actually. Not Jones really, but Nesmith and Dolenz were really talented guys. Dolenz was a great singer-

Pop Genius right there.
(please pay no attention to Jones and Tork trying to instrument sync..., though Nesmith is playing the actual correct parts)

That is TOUGH to sing.

Nesmith was a great writer. I prefered his Monkees stuff to the country stuff he ended up doing.

It's good pop stuff.

I agree that Nesmith had the most talent by far, but Tork too could play guitar. It was really Dolenz and Jones who were just actors. And although Dolenz had a higher voice that fit most of their songs, I think Jones was a better singer.
