$200,000 to use The Best of Times

Postby blt man » Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:37 pm

So the Farrelly brothers paid $200,000 to use The Best of Times in their new movie. http://www.suntimes.com/entertainment/m ... ggles.html
They indicated that when they heard how expensive it was going to be they tested Dream On and some other songs in the relevant scene but none worked so they paid the $200k.

I don't know very much about the music licensing. So, who sets the price? How much of that would actually filter to Dennis?

Dennis should get all of it. Just like the Roboto commercial which was the end of the story with styx

In this case, yes, it's Dennis. We've covered licensing here quite a few times. See http://www.ascap.com/music-career/artic ... Films.aspx. Synchronizing audio to pictures is not the same as, say, Styx re-recording songs for Regeneration.

I read that they are using the new Styx version off of Regeneration Vol ll. It has Gowan on lead vocals. This actually may fit the movie much better because it is a chimpmunks scene where the song gets played.

This is ridiculous. They agreed to pay it. Market value of the song.
