What is your favorite Top 3 Styx single?

Postby Toph » Fri Apr 22, 2011 12:45 pm

All these songs peaked at #3 for Styx. Of course you hear none when you see the band calling themselves Styx in concert. What is your favorite?

A song written 18 years into Styx's career getting the most love. I like this.
"It's really important if you're going to remain a valid band that you play your new stuff. Otherwise you become a parody of what you started out doing." - Janick Gers of Iron Maiden

Wow, this ain't even close. I thought BOT would get some love....I kind of knew how Roboto would fare in this group. Someone needs to show this unscientific poll to DDY because when the voice is acting up or there is something that needs to be cut in his current show, it is usually SMTW that gets the boot. Is it so much harder than the other songs to sing?

Definitely SMTW. Best Styx video, ever. Dennis' voice at its most powerful. Wonderful lyrics. It has it all.

SMTW is a great song, but the Best of Times is the greatest ballad Styx ever did. Much better than Babe and it deserved to peak at number 1 and not 3.

SMTW. GREAT vocal by Dennis on that song, and good lyrics as well.

For a Styx song, I'll go with Best Of Times.
SMTW sounds like it should be a Dennis Solo record.

They all sound like Dennis solo songs actually just like Babe. Only vocals on Babe are Dennis, same with Roboto.

Not for me. It may because of the memories of seeing the video on MTV every few hours or seeing them live at the Spectrum during the Paradise Theater tour; anyway you slice it, I hear "STYX" when I listen to Best Of Times.
When SMTW comes on, I immediately think Desert Moon.

Sort of like when I hear I'll Be alright Without You at the supermarket, my first thought is a solo Perry, ie. Foolish Heart.

The Best of Times is STYX all the way through. Those great harmonies are all over that song.

but yes, SMTW, Roboto and Babe sound more like Dennis solo songs.

Wrong Bry. None sound like a DDY solo song...That is what Styx sounds like to most of America since those 3 plus Babe plus CSA are their most well known songs.

Sounds more like Styx than anything off Cyclorama.

That is your opinion Toph. Babe was IN FACT a solo song. The entire thing was built off Dennis' solo demo. Chuck and John added their parts later (I wonder if it's Chuck at all, very simple bass in it) and either JY or Tommy did the solo, I'd imagine Tommy, not sure. The harmonies on it are all Dennis. Same with Roboto, the harmonies are all Dennis and there are no guitars in it at all. A good drum machine programmer could've done the drums and the bass could be keyboard bass.

Come Sail Away is quintessential Styx with all participating. The heavy part was from a Shaw solo song I believe.

The Best of Times is a great song. No problem with it and yeah, it does sound like Styx. But, if I had to choose the better song (my opinion on what's better isn't gonna be the same as yours) for its lyrical content as well as how well it's put together, I have to go with Show Me The Way. Much tougher vocal to pull off along with other parts of the song that're difficult to pull off, much more difficult than BOT. More difficult doesn't translate to "better" necessarily, but I think that SMTW was not really written as a "HIT" (which I prefer) and I think the other was.

I would agree. I never got the feeling that BOT and SMTW were more like Dennis' solo work.

While I like BOT, I think that SMTW was a better crafted song with better lyrical content.
