What the f*ck is up with that intro piece? Larry's rendition of GI is weak as usual. The harmonies are weak also. How people can say that this version is better then the original I'll never know.

Maybe if you go see a therapist you can stop those voices in your head...Because nobody here has been arguing that this version is better/worse then the original.

My comment about Larry's rendition was meant to mean his performances of that song not just this one. When referring to these versions being better , I am thinking about JY's comment about the current band being "The Best Version of Styx Ever". They are the ones that did a re-record of the song. So, they must feel that their performance of the song now is better then before. If not why bother re-recording the song in the first place?

There is something embarassing about three bands all performing on the same bill without any of the original lead singers.....Dennis, Steve, Lou...

I look at it as a shame because the singers that made those songs great aren't there.

I have been trying to make that point in another thread, but giving the edge to Styx over Foreigner because at least they have one original singer of almost half of their hits.

WHO has said it's better than the original? Gowan's doing an adequate job and is a great entertainer. You have to look at the whole thing and not just the vocals. He plays well, he's fun to watch, and he's a decent singer. DeYoung's stuff is hard to sing. He's doing a pretty good job of it. Had DeYoung not been so difficult to work with and had he wanted to actually BE in Styx, he probably would be. Man, why can't peeps just let this go? No, it's not as good as the original. Nothing usually is. But it doesn't mean they suck or are phonies. They put on a great show. Give them credit. DeYoung is supposedly putting on great shows now (I can't comment I haven't been able to see one) and he's got his wife up there and he's a happy guy. Not sure what the problem is. If you don't like it, don't go. But to just constantly whine about it...

Please refer to my reply to Monker's comment on my post. I would beg to differ that Dennis has ever felt that he didn't want to be in Styx. The reality is that other members didn't want him there. A comment on how good, OK or bad a singer or performance is someones opinion and may not be the same as others. For me, I do not prefer Gowan's performances of DeYoung's songs. Obviously, the band thinks there is something better about these current versions of these songs or they wouldn't be re-recording them. That is if you rule out that the purpose of doing it is just to earn more money from licensing the new versions instead of the old.

Gowan

Gowan's doing an adequate job

That's why they went from Headliner to opening act because he is just adequate, Fact is he ruined the band,

and is a great entertainer.

Great ? How is someone adequate in one breath and great in another?
Please I beg of you stop the bullshit, You don't need to score points,

You have to look at the whole thing and not just the vocals.

Sure hide his vocals cause they are terrible.

He plays well, he's fun to watch, and he's a decent singer

Now he's decent. Why not cut the crap Bry he is not decent he is not great he is not good.
I really think that the band hired him cause of how terrible he sings Dennis they did this on purpose,

DeYoung's stuff is hard to sing. He's doing a pretty good job of it.

Now he's pretty good. You are something else.

Total BS the guy wrote every damn hit and was the voice of the band, To bad he was hard his formula worked period,.

BC, I missed your reply, sorry. Also, I didn't mean "Dennis doesn't want to be in Styx" (though that's how it read). What I meant was "If Dennis wanted to be there, he'd find a way to make it work". That means either sharing the royalties with the guys as in the past, being more democratic, not pushing the ballad thing so much, or whatever. I didn't mean he didn't want to be there. But if you're a person that REALLY wants to be a part of something, you'll make some compromises. This goes for the others as well. BUT- they wanted to tour heavily. Dennis didn't, so I'm not sure how they'd overcome that hurdle. Maybe have Dennis do the Brian Wilson thing and only come out for some tours or something?? If the other 4 members were saying "Dennis, you're being an ass and we can't work with you" don't you think Dennis would do some self-examination and compromise? Personally- I think Dennis has been pretty cool about things since the breakup while the others, not so much. I would think that he'd have that same capacity to pull back a bit and and work more as a team guy instead of "Dennis and the 4 Stygians".

I think what the band thinks is better about the current version is that it is a more harmonious/joyful unit than what it was before with everyone having their own camps and everyone going to their own corners to lick their wounds. Styx IS better with DeYoung. DUH. But it didn't work out that way, so to endlessly complain about it is a waste of time for the fans. It took 5 of these guys to not get along. If they would've wanted to hold it together, they would have. I'm not on anybody's side here. I can see both sides of the argument.

EVERY band needs a heavy. EVERY band needs a guy that holds things together and drives. DENNIS was that guy for years. I think once they all went solo, they realized they didn't need to be (or didn't THINK they needed to be) babysat by Dennis, so there was some resentment there. They SHOULD have worked it out. I totally agree with that. But what they SHOULD have done and what they DID are different. It's better to move on. Play the old albums. Watch the old shows. But to blame the guys there now (Gowan, etc.) seem silly.

What I meant was nobody HERE has said that. I HIGHLY doubt Gowan has said that. Out of all of em, Dennis and Gowan have been the most cool as far as what they've said in interviews.

Gowan's doing an adequate job

froy wrote:That's why they went from Headliner to opening act because he is just adequate, Fact is he ruined the band,

I blame management more than I blame Gowan. They are an opening band IN EUROPE. They were never a big band there. Foreigner is FROM there. Journey is doing well because of DSB and because they went there a few years ago and did well. They're not an opening band except for Yes, which, yeah, I do NOT understand that. Point to Froy.

and is a great entertainer.

froy wrote:

Great PLAYER. Fun to watch. "Entertainer" is different than " virtuoso vocalist". It really is. Dennis was fun to watch in 1977. After that, he became incredibly dorky on stage. Not sure what he changed, but he changed his whole vibe as a front guy. Gowan is more fun to watch than DeYoung these days. He's an adequate fill in for Dennis' vocals. JY is a crap lead singer. Tommy and Dennis are great lead singers. Gowan is an adequate lead singer. Does that help with the distinction? He's a better keyboard player to me, but they're both good players.

He didn't write every hit, but yeah, he wrote most of them. Still, STYX was not about HITS. Styx was an album band. They had singles that did well, but their albums as a whole were the thing that made Styx a great band. It certainly wasn't the hit song Mr. Roboto.

Personally, I think that they all (TS, DDY, JY) wanted to "drive the bus" and had a very hard time compromising. That and on a personal level these guys never fully gelled like some other bands have. In some respects it may be that Dennis ended up "driving the bus" for so long because his ideas were producing very successful results and the others took the position to not fix what wasn't broke.
