Coming of Age

So Styx is rerecording Coming of Age for Regeneration 2 and Night Ranger rerecorded it as a bonus for Somewhere in California (with Ted Nugent), wonder what made Tommy, Jack, and Ted all think now was the time to rerecord it. At the very least they could have all done it together.

It's my favorite song off of the first Damn Yankees album. Having said that, I find it a bit odd that Styx is rerecording a song that is sung mostly by Jack Blades.

Ummm....a complete lack of any original ideas?

Probably something like this. Such a terrible song by any standards. Sounds like a bunch of rednecks drooling over a 13 year old entering puberty.

Styx utterly and completely has sucked since 1998.

Bingo! You have the right answer. Step up and claim your prize, the first pressing of Regeneration 2. (as if volume one wasn't enough)

It could also be that JY suggested it. He knew the "Best Version of Styx Ever" could do the song more justice then any other version.

If they insist on rerecording their songs whether it's Styx or Damn Yankees, why don't they let Gowan do Criminal Mind instead of Styx songs. Makes more sense to me. He doesn't sing in the right key for DDY songs and Styx doesn't seem to know how to change the key of the music to match his voice.

Styx utterly and completely has sucked because Cyclorama was released.

I think the version on "Regeneration 2" is an interesting take on it, And if you go back and read Sterling's interview with Todd (part 1) why they did it is addressed.

Interesting take? How is that? What's really different except that Tommy is singing both parts rather than Jack singing the lower.

Well, the guitar work is different, I think JY's influence in both the rythm and solo sections is evident. Todd's drum parts are (in my opinion) stronger than on the original recording. Jack's vocals are definitely missed. I'm not saying that it is radically different from the original but it's different enough to make it a fun listen.

Does Tommy rally sing both parts?

In concert, Tommy sings Jack's part, and Gowan sings Tommy's part.

Yes. You can't hear Gowan in Coming of Age. As far as High Enough... once again Tommy sings he and Jack's parts, but you can hear Gowan joining in when they start singing... "don't say goodnight, say you're gonna stay forever...". Tommy and Lawrence do trade off however on the repetition part of the chorus when they're singing the, "to fly me over (fly me over) yesterday".

Upon a rehearing it appears that I was wrong about the high vocal in High Enough... Gowan does sing that part. However there are times when TS has 2 vocal tracks going; the lead vocal and one to accompany LG's during the song's more dramatic moments. I am not wrong about Coming of Age though.

Since it seems that these two bands are getting married maybe they should consider changing their name to Damn STYX Yankees.

The CD is really worth a listen if you get a chance, I was listening to it again in the car this afternoon and was again taken by how much better this CD is than the first one. Todd does some amazing drum work on this one, really seems to branching out more. The mixes are MUCH tighter and the harmonies are just great. The song selection really works better as a collection than the first one as well, and as I mentioned in a different thread the version they do of "Queen of Spades" is great and different enough that, to me it stands out as one of the best things this incarnation of STYX has done in quiet a while. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do on part three.

There won't be a part 3. Tommy has recorded all his hits... there's none left. And it won't be a bunch of DDY tunes with Gowan singing either.

They best thing they have done is copy Dennis great job fellas, An don't give me this BS about JY having anything to do with the writing credits we all know whose song it is,

I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do on part three.

Part 3 Starts off with Girls With Guns then goes to Cold War What If and She Cares followed by Blue Collar Man again because they have to add that one then Eddie and Homewrecker off to City Slicker

If I remember correctly I read somewhere that they planned on releasing 3 CD's of re-recordings. You are right that have made their way thru Tommy's hits and that's why I think the 3rd CD will have some surprise choices on it. Maybe they will address some of Tommy and Gowan's solo material, or go for some ot Tommy and JY's deeper cuts. Who knows, guess we will just wait and see.

Haven't they covered most of the deep cuts? I mean when you are now relegating yourself to Damn Yankees cuts, Snowblind, and Queen of Spades, how much deeper can you go?

By the way, if this is such a great CD, put it out there on YouTube so we can judge for ourselves.

I'll probably get shot for this, but I'd like to hear "Shooz" redone just to hear Tommy play slide again. Also wouldn't mind "Lights" or "Love in the Midnight."
