The Grand Illusion vs Pieces of Eight

Postby Baron Von Bielski » Tue Jun 28, 2011 1:00 am

Someone recently pointed out how all our threads get derailed and turn into arguments. Now I'm sure this comparison has been done before, but I figured we could benefit from a healthy debate. My vote goes to The Grand Illusion. Although Pieces of Eight has my favorite DDY song in the title track, I just feel GI is better and more consistent as a whole. It's more prog rock with songs like Fooling Yourself, CSA, Man in the Wilderness and Castle Walls which is what I like about it. Nothing against POE, Dennis' songs carry the album IMO... even though he didn't think so. Tommy's are great as well... Sing for the Day happens to be one of my favorites and his other efforts are classic rock gems. It's close... I love both albums, but like I said I have to give the edge to GI... the slight edge.

Grand Illusion no doubt. Much more thorough throughout. There are some clunkers on side one of Pieces of Eight. Also Grand Illusion is more balanced.

"The Grand Illusion" here.....I can listen to this album in it's entirety, but PO8 has quite a few skip overs (ie "Lords Of The Ring," "The Message" and "Sing For The Day") 8)

I have a tough time with this, but Po8 has more songs I really like, so it gets my vote.

I used to lean more towards GI but as time has passed I prefer PO8 now. Maybe it's because so much of what is on GI has been played to death.

It's currently at 50/50. I would have thought that GI would get the majority of the votes since it was a breakthrough album for them. It's never easy do it again with the follow up to something like that.
