Just because I'd like to preoccupy my mind with something more constructive than the current state of affairs... let's say in 1984 Tommy "didn't take his toys and run home" and Styx released a follow-up to KWH. What songs from desert Moon would have made it to a Styx record. I realize the songs wouldn't have stayed exactly the same... they'd have been Styxified for lack of a better term, but none the less. First of all, Desert Moon would have made a great album title for even a Styx record. I would have chosen the title track... obviously, Don't Wait for Heroes and Gravity. They sound like Styx songs and with JY's and Tommy's imprints they'd of completed the Styx sound.

I could see DWFH, Gravity, DM and maybe Dear Darling (I'll Be There). That album is one of my favorites of Dennis' solo work.

Yeah, any of his songs that in theory would have made the mythical follow up to KWH were in dire need of Dennis' input and Gary Loizzo's engineering. Nothing against Mike Stone or anything... his resume speaks for itself, he produced the best selling of Journey's albums.

I know this is about Desert Moon, and I agree that the songs you mentioned clearly had that Styx sound....balanced out by a couple of songs that were powerfully bad IMO.

BUT...I think his "100 Years From Now" album has more material clearly fit for a Styx album. Songs like...

Rain
Crossing The Rubicon (which, IMO could have fit on Grand Illusions easily)
I Don't Believe In Anything (with a little tweaking from Tommy/JY)
I Believe In You
There Was A Time (which almost seems purposely written with the intention of screaming to Tommy/JY "See?! the magic is still here....let's get back together...remember THIS sound?!")
Breathe Again.

In fact, just about the entire album seems like a letter written to the current members of Styx, that they belong together. I can't argue that even though I really like Gowan in Styx, that the songs I mentioned above would sound really good as Styx songs, with that little bit of input from Tommy and/or JY. It's just a damn shame that it seems the differences that made for such magic between them musically, also served to split them apart. Even the cover artwork on the CD screams "Styx". Man.....these songs and most of the songs from Cyclorama, would have made for an awesome double album.

Lastly, I wish...with Gowan or DeYoung...that they'd just friggin put out some new material. I know WHY they don't....but it doesn't stop me from wishing for it. I'm in with that group that hasn't seen Styx in a couple of tours now, cause I prefer to hear 4-5 new songs mixed in with the classics.....as that really makes a show for me.

It's funny, just like my previous post...I think work after the ones mentioned (This time from Tommy) are songs I think would fit styx better. I find songs from "What If" to be much more suited for Styx...like...

Jealousy
Remo's Theme (with some tweaking from DDY to change the keys to a more piano sound IMO)
Reach For The Bottle (I really think DDY could ad some fantastic atmosphere to this song ad turn it into an even better song)
This Is Not A Test
True Confessions (remove some of the cheesy synths replaced with DDY's keys, and leave the piano)
Count On You (This one needs the most help, but the potential is there)
Nature Of The Beast

Sigh....like I said above...it's a shame that shit has to get in the way, cause I truly believe God made Tommy and DDY like chocolate and peanut butter, or donuts and milk, hamburgers and cheese, potatoes and butter...etc etc etc.... each good on their own....but awesome together.

Well, "Homewrecker" was about Dennis wrecking the band and that made it onto a Styx album so maybe KMH would have. As far as production, I think the remaster Tommy did on that album improved the album overall.

I would agree the quite a bit of OYFN is in the vein of Styx. He actually has said it was on purpose that he returned to that "formula" for lack of a better term. So, I guess you could pull more off OYFN then DM to include on a Styx album. I was very happy that he returned to that style of songwriting because that is what I have really missed. I am hopeful that we will see some sort of follow up to OYFN but, I am not so sure about that.

Yep...totally agree. OHYFN was the first I've heard from DDY since they split, that made me think "Damnit we're missing out on something really special, cause they can't do whatever it takes to be able to be on stage together for a couple hours a night 4 nights a week.

I never got to see DDY solo before 2006 and really wanted to hear how DM sounds live. I liked the live version quite a bit. I think it's one of the best songs he has ever written.

You make some great points and I completely agree about OHYFN. Many songs would be great Styx songs. Could you imagine Crossing the Rubicon as a Styx songs? Classic like Suite Madame Blue... at least to me. It's a great album and proves that he's not just some AC artist that just writes sappy ballads. Ironically I made a playlist on my iPod with a mix of OHYFN and selected songs from Cyclorama and also I used Just Be (studio version) from CYO. Obviously I used nothing from Gowan nor Glen, not because I hate either of them... because their songs sucked. I would love for Glen to be back in the band, but his songs on Cyclorama were sub par. I combined both albums and came up with 15 songs... very balanced and would have made a great Styx album.

I almost totally agree with you. I think Crossing The Rubicon could have been one of the best Styx songs ever! I also wish Burtnik was back in that band. I liked that he had recorded a couple CDs with them, and personally I liked his songs...even if they were the least "Syxish" among them. As for Gowan...I actually think his two songs on Cyclorama were that important balance of style that Tommy needs on a Styx album, to keep is from leaning too much into sounding like a TS solo album. Gowan...IMO..is a darker version of DDY (note I did not say better) but still brings the balance of theatricality that Styx needs, albeit the darker theatricality. I especially loved the song Fields Of The Brave....as the story is wonderful and it's a great message....and to me it has an undeniable Styx vibe to it.
