A meeting with DDY

Not me, but a friend of mine did a meet and greet with Dennis a few months ago pre-show.

He's a geek for Dennis's solo work and asked him about playing certain songs (none of which I know)

Dennis said to him "I'd love to, but who would pay to hear it".

He was very gracious and funny about it and does love doing the Styx sets. His comment on Styx was "Wish them well. We had a great run."

Now how sincere he was saying that - go ahead and debate it.

I think his comment was sincere. To the best of my knowledge he has never made a negative comment about the current Styx or any of it's members. If anything the guy has tact.

I believe him. I believe that the same part of his personality that makes him kinda geeky to me, is what also makes me believe that he really means it and is a classy and good guy. Now, mind you, i'm not saying that this means I think Tommy is the opposite....cause obviously I'm a fan of Styx now AND then...but I think Tommy and DDY are just two different people. DDY I believe honestly means it when he says he enjoyed the time with Tommy in the band and the reuinion and all...and I also believe Tommy when he says that they just weren't good for each other from HIS point of view. When Tommy says this, I don't read it as an insult to DDY...but just his honest feelings. Sometimes, between two people, they can see the same situation from different points of view, and both be correct, and neither to blame. When Tommy says they weren't good for each other, I think he means that their differences were just too much to be able to work together....and I like that he says it without implying it was DDY's fault...even though some people read that into it.

Sometimes though it's good not to say something at all if it may hurt someone's feelings. I view his (Tommy) comments as negative and potentially hurtful even if they don't come across as an obvious insult to most. If that's how he feels why say it? Why destroy what they had? That's how I view it and I'm sure Dennis wasn't ecstatic about it.

I get that...but everyone's different...and maybe he feels he owes some sort of explanation to the fans as to why they're not together. I can talk about my ex and say that we just weren't right for each other....and that doesn't insult or accuse either of us, and the truth can be said while, at the same time, not blaming anyone. Is it negative? Yes...but life's full of negatives...and if the truth can be told kindly and without insult or blame...then I can't find fault with it.

Even DDY himself said to go see the new line-up, that's class right there. The comment Tommy had in that last interview to me wasn't being mean or spiteful, I think he was showing tact to a question he prolly hears quite often (and i'm sure he's sick of hearing) 8)

Tommy seems to be more blunt in expressing his point of view. I don't feel he is as tactless as JY. I believe Tommy respects Dennis as a musician and performer. JY not so much, based on comments he's made. Dennis could be just as blunt on his point of view but, I think he understands that he has nothing to gain by it and does not want to tear down the work they did together.

4 or 5 years ago thanks to Suite I was fortunate enough to meet Dennis, his manager, his drummer(who has since passed), his son, and Glen.

100% class acts all the way.

It was a GREAT night.

Borders bookstore. Tommy and DDY 7 Deadly Zens Tour.

I'm not so sure it's Tommy that is against DDY in the band. (It's JY)

Why the hell would Tommy invite Dennis to his thing to sing a DDY song if they were not ok?

I do not know the inner dynamics of Styx the way I know Journey's, but that is my opinion.

Who knows. It certainly is puzzling between some of things Tommy says verses some of his actions.

I wonder if Dennis has seen the new lineup. How could he go to a Styx concert and not be recognized?

But according to Pinochio, he was just miserable during that time like he was in 96 and 97. Yeah, they look real miserable in those Borders clips. FULL OF SHITE.

Yeah I know... I don't buy that story at all. If they were miserable... he certainly wouldn't have invited DDY to join him, he had JY. Anyways, how about Dennis in the clip... can that guy sing or what? You mean to tell me he prefers hearing Gowan sing those songs night after night... makes me cringe. There's also a clip from the same Border's even whwere they do Suite Madame Blue... just awesome.

I would have given anything to have been there that day.

I don't care how much Tommy doesn't get along with Dennis. There is no denying the fact that those two belong together musically.

I just watched the SMB Borders clip. Even Better!
You younger fans who discovered Styx after they broke up and have only seen the current cover-band have no idea what you missed in the 70's and 80's.
Some of the shows I was at, particularly in the mid to late 70's, were breathtaking. Especially the live vocal harmonies and the chemistry on stage. Everyone who's been to those shows (and wasn't stoned and/or drunk!) knows what I'm talking about.
But those Borders clips were the first time I have ever seen Dennis and Tommy alone performing in a room together.

I saw the Equinox Tour Crystal Ball Tour Grand Illusion Tour Pieces of 8 Tour Cornerstone Tour PT and Roboto as well as 96 and 97
Probably at least 50 shows in all. You could not beat STYX in there prime. Today is not STYX and it looks like it will never be STYX again.
Very Sad Tommy Shaw killed his career,

Yep Gowan is gone he told me he said he can't stand Shaw anymore and he's going solo. He said the band has begged him to stay because they need the money but he is sick of singing Dennis, He hopes Dennis gets his gig back , Starting to like Gowan now,

It's more like Styx was killed. Tommy will still be able to appear on all those tribute albums by labels you never heard off. Back up plan could be the bowling alley in Alabama. He did say it was fun and he was content there.
