How exciting! So what are they charging for this batch of retreads?

I love the re-records musically (They let Todd & Ricky add a lot of nice intricacies) but vocally they're just average. Lawrence has come a LONG way since joining in 1999, but he is still nowhere near the "shock & awe" vocalist that Dennis is.

Like I have always said, you can't beat the original. The current members have been trying to play down Dennis' contributions to the band in different ways. In my opinion, these retreads seem to be some sort of lame attempt to try and prove that they don't need DeYoung to produce what they did in their hay day. Sorry guys it ain't workin'.

I just don't get this....aside from very subtle differences that the casual fans wouldn't notice....they're the same songs. I'm speaking about volume 1, as haven't heard volume 2. As much as I DO like Gowan, his vocals do NOT improve on DDY's original and, as I said, Even Tommy's vocals were a little better on the originals.

So basically, I don't get these re-do's, unless they decide to do a more modern production or change them up.

When Journey did the same, at least they included the disc for free, included with the purchase of a full CD of brand new material, which was very well received...and I thought a very good album of material.

Now, I'm not generally a complainer about the current incarnation of Styx. I am a fan....however...I just don't get all the re-treads....since I doubt they'll sell in large numbers. I know why they don't put out new material...there's just not the market for it....but it's really sad....cause I would MUCH prefer to hear new Styx songs.

From an artistic standpoint they don't make sense. As you mentioned they are not really any different from the originals.

You all don't get it. They are trying to make them as close to the originals as possible so that they can sell this to a movie/TV show/commercial etc. instead of the original recording. It enables them to bypass A&M and bypass Dennis DeYoung and collect all the royalties themselves. These guys are just out for the money. Anyone who thinks otherwise is, as Pinocchio put it so eloquently in 1977, "Fooling Yourself".

Of course, not exactly sure what producer or company would be stupid enough to use crap songs like Snowblind or Miss America to push a product or a movie....

I believe if you're going to rerecord one of your own songs, make it sound more like how you do it live. Don't do it note for note with the original. It's lame.

DDY still gets paid for songwriting. Remember, different kinds of licensing for different uses.

Yep. It only gets them around A&M.

It gets them around the issue of the masters which most of the labels own and get the majority of the royalties on. EVERY classic artist has done this. It has become a trend lately to start packaging and selling them though. DDY did it with Roboto for the VW commercial. Chicago did it and are selling the songs away on their website really cheap. The list of artists that do it could go on for days.

Styx will continue to make these as long as they sell.

Well according to Tommy it was because UME\A&M lost the original masters. Oh please....

Not true. Uni knows where the 2-track masters are since they've done a billion compilations. Bob Ludwig acknowledged in my interview the tapes are in good condition. I do not think Uni knows where all of the multis are (hence re-recordings for things like Rock Band where you need separation) or things like rarities (not much is out there)/alternate takes/demos. Someone's got that stuff somewhere. But the normal stuff? Still around.

Anyway, the reality is that Uni has had NO interest in reissuing the catalog, hence licensing to specialty labels for limited runs (such as the Audio Fidelity GI on CD and now the vinyl reissues on Friday Music).
