So I'm in the grocery store and over the PA comes "I Believe In You" off 100 Years From Now. That was interesting to hear in a public place! I had forgotten about the Bruce Hornsby-esque piano bit at the end.

Made me go back and listen to "100 Years" and damn it is a good album. I had forgotten how strong all of the songs are. Even started to appreciate "Private Jones" more. There is really no weak track on there (well, Breathe Again is the closest that comes to that).

Would love to see a track or two on that album incorporated into mainstream culture - either a movie or commercial or something. That album was too good not to get more of a promotional push in the states. But is interesting that I Believe In You is coming across the Musak system of my local grocery store. Has it been released as a single?

You didn't like Private Jones the first time you heard it? That's my favorite track on the entire album. And Rubicon of course!

If I listen to "The Blend" on satellite radio I hear that song quite a bit. The album is very solid... it has some great stuff on there. He wrote it like a complete Styx record. You can tell what songs could have been Tommy's and which one could have been JY's. Private Jones would have obviously worked with JY on vocals. Songs like This Time Next Year, I Don't Believe in Anything, Respect Me and Forgiveness could have been Tommy's. Turn Off CNN would have also worked as a Styx song for Tommy, but the same could be said for Dennis. Point is, it would have worked as a great Styx album. But it's still a great Dennis DeYoung album.

Of course it would work. Who do you think was bringing the majority of material that worked well for Styx? I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.

Late to the party here but I just got this album (well mp3 album from amazon). This is just awesome. I'm writing this as I listen to it. So far every track has been just incredible. I'm on track 5 now (Save Me). This sounds like classic Styx . I absolutely love Rain and so far Save me is up there with it. Normally it takes me a few listens to really start liking a new cd but this has been instant love. Best Styx album since Paradise Theater so far.

It's some of Dennis' best solo work IMHO. He pretty much nailed it on trying to create the sound he did with Styx. Sadly though, I think this is the last time we will be getting new material like this.

So would I. I think that his current band is really good. Feels more like a band then just a group of hired musicians to back him up. I don't get the impression that Dennis is really motivated to release new material and deal with the stuff that goes along with trying to get it released. IMHO, I think the only reason OYFN came about was because a label asked Dennis to do it. Something like that just does not happen very often for an artist that is at the stage Dennis is in his career.

Definitely a first rate swan song, if that is what this album will ultimately be.

I do think Dennis had much inspiration post his Styx ousting, and many of these songs deal with that, plus his take on life in the computer/cable channel age and, of course, mortality.

If something should/would inspire him to compose again, he could do worse than create something with the outstanding players he has now in his band. I would LOVE something new, but it doubt that will happen for him again. ( I still want him to take that great voice and use it on a Christmas album or another 10 On Broadway while there's still time.)

I don't think we have the last from Dennis with recorded material. Dennis has a good relationship with his label. That said, I think we have heard the last album from Styx although we might get a single or two. (Don't count the Regurgetation series) and they don't have a label at the present time.

This is good news indeed, NH. I am surprised (but then again, maybe not) that he is still signed with a label. I am hoping the well is not dry yet. He is a creative person, with a gift for songwriting, and there is still plenty of material out there nowadays for inspiration.

I never saw anywhere that 100 Years is listed as anything but a Canadian release. Billboard has it listed only as a Canadian album, I believe. The US version got zero promotion, from what I can tell, which surprised me in that Rounder chose to release it here.

I just assumed he had a deal with Rounder that ended with the 100 Years release, but maybe not.

As I said above, it really would be nice if he got the inspiration to write new music.
