And the absolutey awful preprogrammed keyboard. It sounds like an 8-bit video game.

Really neat to see this performance. I think it really shows how much Tommy Shaw added to the band and of course how much the band grew by the time they toured The Grand Illusion.

You see Shaw here just being a bit player and learning the ropes. Dennis plays more of the front man roll which he does reasonably well. As Shaw's part grew and his stage presence took over it allowed Dennis more freedom to do other things. This is the ultimate Styx lineup in its infancy.

Chuckie's grinding bass tone on the Rickenbacker is great on this broadcast. Kind of reminiscent of John Wetton's epic bass tone on King Crimson's Red.

This has been posted before, but it's always fun to watch again. Why the hell was Dennis wearing Suzanne's maternity shirt???? And JY, a belly shirt???? Gotta love the platform boots. Oh, lordy..........Much as I miss the 70s, the clothes: not so much.

I think the concert from 1978 is a better show, actually.

Tommy never "Took over" and was never considered the frontman until 1999....

You're right. I did not intend it to sound like he took over the band or the stage. Just that he is pretty meek at this point in the band and his stage presence took more of a role in the band it allowed Dennis to do other things and not be depended on to be at the front and middle of the stage.

True, but Tommy's stage presence then and later was better than any of em. That's one of the reasons he got in and the band has acknowledged that "Tommy turned Styx into a band that just stood there and played to a band that put on a show". Definitely.

What's with the "Growl" thing that JY was doing? That's funny.

yeah, the 78 show was HUGELY better.

I'm also digging JY's beard - he looks like one of the Beach Boys (Carl Wilson?) around that time.

He and Dennis look much better with beards. Now... Jy looks like an older Kevin Bacon

This whole Winterland show is pretty good. Yes, the vid & aud could be much better, but it is nice to have it doc'd.
Getting past that medieval girlie crap that DDY has on is probably the most difficult thing.

We had a pretty long discussion of the stage attire the first time the link to this show was posted.

No WONDER Dennis talks about his goofy clothing choices in the 70's in a rather humorous tone now.

Again. One must place all of that in the time and that type of oddball getup was popular for bands to wear onstage back then. Lots of pseudo 17th/18th century frills and boots to go with the long hair and beards.
