1981 was one of the greatest years in AOR rock with Journey, Styx, Foreigner, and REO Speedwagon all releasing their best selling albums of all time that year. 3 of the 4 bands are taking advantage of this incredible year and incredible albums by celebrating it by re-releasing the original albums with additional liner notes, maybe a bonus track, being featured on national TV/Radio programs and all being remastered. All, that is, exccept one....Tommy and JY don't want to acknowledge anything post 1978 and so I guess have decided to not make a big deal out of the 30th anniversary of their only #1 album. That is a shame. Too much Dennis influence on it I guess. And god forbid, it has a ballad on it....Glad to see that the other 3 bands are quite as short sighted....

You'd still think they'd do something. After all it has Shaw's highest charting single (TMTOMH), Snowblind and Half-Penny, Two-Penny. All songs that they play live or have since Dennis has been gone. I agree with you... it's fucking stupid.

I really don't get it. They are playing two dates this weekend, in which they'll play GI in its entirety one night, then Po8 in its entirety the next night. Why don't they acknowledge PT? I just don't get it. 81 was a brilliant year for music, and I applaud the other groups for what they are doing, but I don't understand why Styx is doing nothing.

Seems to me, a nicely done reissue of PT, with extras, would be a much smarter idea and better seller than yet ANOTHER compilation CD.

PT was indeed their only number 1 album but not their biggest seller.

You're probably right, but it'd be nice to see current numbers of their total sales for each album.

I searched Google, but could not find anything that gave numbers. Wiki, of course, is a mess and can't be trusted. The only thing I was able to find was the RIAA site. It lists albums, CDs, DVDs, etc., and gives the dates of Gold and Platinum certifications. Pretty interesting stuff. Maybe someone else knows where to find actual sales numbers.

http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata ... ble=SEARCH

Just type Styx into the search database, you'll get three pages of info.

Who said they have any say in re-releasing the original albums? When I asked a Universal rep a few years ago about remastering the originals, he said there would have to be a demand for it and he didn't see it happening.

You're an idiot.

If Universal wants to release an old album or compilation, there is not much Styx can do about it.

If that is not true, I would like to see some real evidence that Universal wants to release something but Styx is not allowing it to happen. Some troll posting to try to stir shit up means very little.

Journey has nothing to do with Sony releases, and hasn't since Arrival. If they did, do you really think they would time some of their past releases to coincide with Sony's compliations (GHLive, Essential Journey, etc.)

I think the reason is Gowan cannot perform Dennis' songs from that album very well. He really has butchered Best of Times and Rockin' The Paradise. If they were going to do something special with PT then they would have to include those songs. I think they have learned from the past not to go there.

What's interesting is that they have been ignoring those songs which one can assume were popular based on how well PT sold.

This is pretty much the reason although it would never be acknowledged publicly. Boots exist. Gowan is OK on some DDY stuff, but songs like BoT were just horrible on the Evening With Styx tour early on. It was dropped soon thereafter. RTP lasted a bit longer, but ultimately dropped never to return. It also means they'd have to do "Nothing Ever Goes as Planned" and "Lonely People" - two more Dennis centric songs. And while I did enjoy the GI/Po8 shows as a whole, "Castle Walls" was not very good. So IMO they do the right thing by not playing them, but at the same time, you ignore some big hits. It's worked so far for them, so why change the formula? If you want to hear some of that stuff, go see DDY.

As for a reissue, the label has not felt the need to reissue the catalog themselves and have licensed it to labels like Audio Fidelity who recently did a lackluster issue of Grand Illusion. The only hint was back in 1995 when remasters were announced and then never showed up. The only portion of the Styx catalog to get the overhaul - and more than once - is the Wooden Nickel stuff. When I interviewed Bob Ludwig awhile back he basically acknowledged the label has no interest in Styx reissues. The Japan mini-LP sleeves are not worldwide releases, and not all are remasters (most were), and probably only from the Japanese tapes. So if you want Styx remasters of the A&M years, get some of those.

I agree. I've always thought it grossly unfair that PT was the #1 album on the charts, rather than Grand Illusion. To me, PT comes off as very slick, polished, empty, and soulless, where GI was more raw, unified, and soulful. The band was hungry and cohesive, and it showed in the album. GI should have been #1. It's very true of the buying public not recognizing quality when the album that pretty much everyone nowadays agrees was Styx' pinnacle is GI, and not their #1, PT. It's the same phenomenon that goes on today, when masses and masses of Bieber, Kesha, and Perry albums are sold, but are crap music that most likely will not be around 30 years from now. Quantity does not necessarily equal quality.

For Me Styx's top 5 were:

5. Cornerstone
4. Paradise Theatre
3. The Grand Illusion
2. Pieces of Eight
1. EQUINOX - A TOTAL Masterpiece!!!
