I think the facts prove that when that happens you get kicked out of the band.

Wow that's good stuff. Are you sure you're not a comedian with material like that? You're a fucking bonehead. I guess you missed my point completely. Too bad I can't write it in crayon for you. I'll make it simple for you... JY is full of shit and he sounded like a jerk off with a short memory and a bad ear.

uh.....yeh he does actually....gowan is a part of JY's business nowadays......and JY desperatley wants that business to continue to be successful......so like any good business man trying to "promote" his current business he tells us all to drink the kool-aid on gowan.....because the "new styx is the best styx".....we all know and JY knows that in reality that nearly "everyone" would prefer that "styx" be DDY, Tommy and JY together. so in a double pronged effort to manipulate others to believe what he says while I think also trying to ensure stabbing a couple of blades into DDY's gut JY makes these absurb claims.

I love DDY and I wish he were still in styx.....I am also OK with Gowan....decent singer, fabulous keyboard player and super entertaining on stage......since DDY isnt in the band Gowan is a good replacement......because what he lacks vocally he makes up for in stage presence......BUT i would prefer to see the "classic" three together.....but it doesnt look like its gonna happen soon.

I also happen to be someone that understands how bad relationships can develop in a band and the need to be apart is real.....so it's no surprise that JY and tommy are probably happier being away from dennis....we all dont like it and point out things like "well they could make more money and sell more tickets....blah blah blah...." but that stuff is obvisouly not the dirving force for what JY and tommy want to do with their careers. and in reality, although dennis acts like he is easy to get along with and "wants" a reunion....he would likely be very difficult to deal with and they know it.

Was just reading some comments on the Styx facebook page and noticed that the main concern to some of the posters about this interview is that Ricky was left out. Jy talks about pretty much everyone in the interview (even DDY), but leaves out Ricky.

I wonder if this means Ricky's days are numbered in Styx?

the thing I found most disturbing on the FB page was that Styx Jewelry was the band's next release. I guess making new music is just never gonna happen.

Here you go Yogi and others. Copying and pasting screwed up the document so I redid the document in word so that it will look right here.

After being together for 40 years and overcoming such challenges as the death of longtime drummer John Panozzo and replacing well-known frontman Dennis DeYoung, Chicago band Styx continues to be a strong musical force.
Styx will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 at Rialto Square Theatre, 102 N. Chicago St., Joliet. Tickets range in price from $35-$95, and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. The day before the show, Styx is set to make a live appearance on Rosie O’Donnell’s new TV show.
Styx is touring in support of “Regeneration, Volume I & II,” which features rerecorded classics as well as a new song, “Difference In The World.”
The Kane County Chronicle had the chance to talk to longtime guitarist James “JY” Young about a number of topics, including the band’s longevity.

"Kane County Chronicle: Is it extra special to come back to the Chicago area and play?"

James “JY” Young: It’s a great thing to look out in the audience and see familiar faces. In Chicago, there’s probably the highest percentage of people who we have known that have been fans for a long time, and then we’re also around friends and family.

"Kane County Chronicle: Of course, “Regeneration, Volume I & II” recently came out. What was it like rerecording these songs with this lineup? What did the current lineup bring to the songs?"

James “JY” Young: It is hard to go back and recreate the magic that we created in the first place. You don’t always realize you are creating magic when you are in the process of doing it.

"Kane County Chronicle: Do you even try to compare these new versions with the original versions?"

James “JY” Young: I think that everyone will compare them, so my goal was to make sure they do not suffer by comparison. That was the primary goal. And the second goal was to see if I couldn’t get a better vocal performance, which I think I did on my songs “Miss America” and “Snowblind,” and maybe play a little bit more evolved and advanced guitar solos on a couple of these, which I think I did on “Snowblind” and “Queen of Spaces.”

"Kane County Chronicle: A lot of people probably forget that this lineup has been together longer than any other lineup in the band’s 40-year history. What makes this lineup so good?"

James “JY” Young: Well, God bless and God rest John Panozzo’s soul, he was an amazing drummer in his own right, but sometimes there is an opportunity presented if you sadly lose a member. That’s something you don’t look forward to. John was an amazing guy on so many different levels, not only his drumming. But that opened the door for Todd Suchermann, who actually grew up in the north suburbs of Chicago and is an amazing talent and grew up on Styx’ music, so he was ideal for the position. Todd brought a new excellence to the band. In a 2009 readers poll of Modern Drummer magazine, he was voted best drummer. John was great, but Todd is at the top of the list. It’s kind of like having a new engine on a racecar. It’s just made it that much more fun to take it out and drive.

"Kane County Chronicle: And I suppose a lot of people refer to Lawrence Gowan as your new singer, although he’s actually been with the band since 1999. How did you pick him and what do you think he brings to the band?"

James “JY” Young: Well, Lawrence was a superstar in Canada, but never really broke through down here. And he really likes touring, and touring was really at the center of what we were intending to do, because that’s what we unable to do for the last few years Dennis DeYoung was around. We didn’t know if he would ever be up to it, and we had too many opportunities in 1999 to ignore them, and just decided to go on with or without Dennis. Lawrence is perhaps a more gifted keyboardist than Dennis, in terms of technical expertise and prowess, and he is certainly a more athletic stage performer than Dennis. He’s got a higher range than Dennis and he sounds a little bit different than Dennis where it counts. “Grand Illusion” is typically the second song we do when on tour, and he just nails that thing, and it just sounds like Styx when he’s singing it. Lawrence is just an incredibly talented guy that’s got a lot going for him.

"Kane County Chronicle: The “Regeneration” project contains a new song, “Difference In The World.” Is this a precursor to perhaps a new album?"

James “JY” Young: Perhaps. It’s a crazy thing to take a year off to make a record, which is kind of what it takes. Some of our colleagues have done it. But the fact of the matter is that at this point in time, there is no outlet for us to receive the kind of penetration, airplay or what have you on any one song. It’s more likely that we do one track here and one track there, kind of going back to the ’50s. Back then, everybody did singles, and if you had enough hit singles, you put them together on an album.

"Kane County Chronicle: I suppose there are some Styx fans who for whatever reason, won’t accept Styx without Dennis DeYoung. Is there any chance that there could be a Styx with Dennis DeYoung again?"

James “JY” Young: Not from where I sit. Dennis really doesn’t like touring as aggressively as we tour. He really is interested more in musical theater. When we did get back together in 1996, we had a phenomenal reunion tour, and then the next year, he decided to limit how much we could tour. We got everybody back on board, back going, and then he cut the tour short so he could go work on his musical theater piece. We have such incredible momentum with what we are doing here. We’re going up and up. It makes no sense on any level to me personally to go backwards. The chemistry of the band now is better than it’s ever been, for whatever reason. I truly wish Dennis DeYoung happiness, and joy and health and wealth and success. We did some great work together. But right now, we’re having too much fun to try and change things around.

What a crock of shit. Guess JY still can't tell when they created the "magic". Otherwise he would have realized these retreads are pointless except to collect another dollar.

P.S. Thanks for taking the time to post the article.

That is if you consider the current band to be Styx other than in a copyright, naming rights view.
