Circus: December 11, 1979 – Figures

Can’t buy me love?

Pollsters measure band popularity by telephone, but fans really vote for their favorite bands with their pocketbooks when they buy concert tickets and record albums. Below is a chart using comparative figures to indicate the relative market strength of Styx, Van Halen, Cheap Trick and Foreigner. Some of the figures are “ballpark” estimates gathered from managers, record companies and band members. Such figures cannot be quantified, and some groups have been known to exaggerate their own popularity, but these statistics provide some measure of rock power.
